How many coins are in your collection?

I have about 250, in the "grand scheme of things" I would consider this a small collection, after 20 years of active collecting.

  • If you count the 'hoard' part of my collection -- i.e. all the Wheaties -- then there are probably ten thousand!! Real stuff? Maybe a thousand. maybe 1500.

Depends on if you are counting wheat pennies; I have jars full of them. They are not worth much at all, but I probably have about 1000 of those. In my "better" collection, I probalby have around 300. Still, pretty small.
  • I have about 75-100 coins in my collection.

Close to 90 certified coins, plus ALOT of mint and proof sets, raw Lincoln cents, currency, and other miscellaneous stuff.

  • My database says 287 coins. Some of these are in the form of proof and mint sets, so if they were to be counted as individual coins I'd have to say this total would be closer to 600.

Geez I have a lot. No wonder I completely forget about some of them.

I have no idea. I have about 100 slabs and untold hundreds in non-slabs.

Interesting responses. Of my 250, I have 31 draped bust, 106 capped bust (mostly halves), and the rest miscellaneous type and unfinished sets. I have not included the circulated wheaties.

    Currently 122 cataloged coins.

This does not include Proof Sets, Mint Sets, and State Quarter Rolls
  • 101.

About 20 of which I hate and would like to upgrade this afternoon, if possible. About 10 on the other side that I wouldn't sell ever for any reason under circumstances as I believe they are the finest known and can't be improved upon.

Does anyone remember the Parrino theory that you should only have a "box of 20"?? If you find a nicer coin, then you sell the worst one and maintain only one box. Seemed like an intriguing idea. Anyone still follow that idea??

I have about 80 slabbed Trade Dollars. Some of the numbers that I've seen here are astounding....no wonder there was a thread about losing coins about a week ago. Great thread.

300 IHC, 200 wheat cents and at last count about 2000 other coins, but that is 45 years of collecting, so less than 60 coins a year.

  • A more interesting question than how many coins do you have is what do you collect, like saying i collect by type trying to find the brest examples i can afford for originality and my favorites are barber quarters and halves. To answer the question asked, about 20 coins, but i don't collect the same coins i did when i was a kid. I've had to sell some of my coins for economic reasons recently, but the ones i have left are going with me when i die so i don't think i could fit 1000 wheaties in there with me.

In the collected hoard of two or three generations--1000-2000, silver, copper, mostly circulated, most coins not worth much.

In the area in which I currently collect, I intend to have a collection of 17 coins (okay, maybe I will fudge to maybe 30)...I am in the process of paring down to two sets:

    1. Carson City gold coins of each denomination ($5, $10, and $20) from each decade--1870's, 80's and 90's for a total of nine coins.

    2. New Orleans gold coins, one from each decade--1830's-1900's, a total of eight coins. Anyone have an extra 1861-O or 1879-O Double Eagle or 1839-O Quarter Eagle?

When I complete these two sets, these will be what I consider my collection.

Lakes, my goal is to have a collection of twenty or fewer coins, as above.

my Coin Elite database shows 2055, but there are many wheat cents, foreign stuff and others. Total(a guess) about 5000?
  • Around 600 Seated Quarters.
All other "stuff", 10's of thousands.
    Collecting since 1957.

As per the "one box theory", Doug Winter had an interesting article about that a while back (link).

Interesting article - of course the "rare gold coins" bias shows. I would have to agree with many of those choices. I would have to delete one and replace it with a great 1856 FE, but not sure which - make it a box of 11. image

How many coins in my collection - well, that's an ever-changing number, but I would say somewhere on the order of 8,500 not including the hundreds of thousands I have yet to go through. Count those and it's over 700,000. I wish I could say they were all worth at least a buck each - not the case.

About 500 Slabs, Many rolls and pounds of loose coins- mostly wheat cents.
  • I have about 50 that would really hurt if I lost any one of them and 12 that I really, really care about. The other hoards of junk I keep mainly for reference and intrigue.
