Buying on eBay, would you pay more if the seller was a forum member?

I've seen posts in the past where forum members discussed selling at a discount to other members, but I thought I would ask a question from a buyer's perspective.

Let's say you're surfing eBay and find a nice coin that you need for your collection. The current bid is already a little more than you would normally pay, but you notice the seller is a respected forum member. Do you bid higher than you normally would, and if so, how much higher?

And yes, this question is more than hypothetical in my case! image

Edited to add: Assume the coin is worth about $100

  • I might be a little extra just for the piece of mind.
  • Nope. As cold as that may sound, I'm cheap and want to get things at the lowest price possible, regardless of who the seller is. image

  • If I know the coin will be as described, or better, I'll usually go a little higher (within reason). There are sellers on eBay, and here, who I'll often bid more than "normal" because I know the coin will go into my collection and I won't have to worry about it anymore.

    So, yes...I'll definitely go a little higher with a forum member than with someone I don't know.

    Yes, I have and would again. Probably no more than 5-10%, but two things come to mind to justify that position.

    1. Peace of Mind regarding the current transaction;
    2. We're all building relationships/reputations during our collecting lifetime

    I want to build mine with quality people, many of whom I find here.

    I'm with Greg. I'll pay a little more knowing the seller is interested in maintaining their relationship with fellow collectors. It is a long term adventure, and a pretty small core fraternity.

    Maybe. If the forum member is someone I'm familiar with, I'll trust their description more and if they describe a coin well, I may be more willing to pay a bit more in anticipation of a really nice coin for the grade. Otherwise it's a peace of mind issue. I've recently done three deals with forum members. And I think the fact that we all know each other from here makes it much easier to do things without the normal hassle.
