What is "putty"

I've seen a few post that make reference to coins that are doctored with putty. What is it and why do the doctors use it?

    Putty is the gook or goop thats used to hold windows in ... Umm oh you mean as putty pretains to coins . umm i dont know what it is.

    Also what does it look like on a coin ? Does it turn color or just start cracking after time has elapsed ?

    Putty is a generic term for any type of filler substance such as automobile body filler, resins, epoxy, hardening wax, composite fillers, etc. It is used to fill in areas of a coin such as cuts, gashes, planchet flaws, and bagmarks of all shapes and sizes.

    Dragon - Are you saying that coin doctors use automobile body filler on coins to "fill in the cracks ?
