A member has passed........

It seems Coinut has succumbed to his long illness. I received this email from Richard's son:

"I don't know who you all are just that you are in my fathers email address
book. I am
writing to let you know that he passed away on 2 Feb @0300. His long battle
with chronic illnesses is over. I ask that you remember him in your prayers."

Dean A. Holloway

Richard was nothing but kind and courteous to me in any of our dealings, and seemed like a good man. He was a long time member of this board with many contributions. He will be in my family's prayers.

That's very sad. I had several conversations with him via PM, and he mentioned his health. I hope his family is at peace. They are in my thoughts.

Wow, that's incredibly sad image. My condolences to his family.

About 2 years ago, I was trying to get rid of some of my old baseball cards. He happened to win an auction I held for some Tony Gwynn cards, and I thew in a bunch of old San Diego Padres commons from the 1970s for good measure. He was thrilled, explaining that he had seen several Padres games as a kid and recognized many of the names. Looking back, I'm glad I was able to allow Richard a moment of childhood remembrance. He'll be missed.

image Though, I did not know him as some of you did, his family's loss will be in my family's prayers. May he finally acheive the peace we all search for in life, and may his family remember him for what I'm sure he was, a loving father, husband and truly nice guy.

    It is so sad.

That kind of tribute puts all the "modern vs classics" and "dealers vs collectors" yapping in perspective, agree?

He's an example for the rest of us. Hope people will say the same about me when the time comes.

Richard was one of the very first contacts I had on this board. He was selfless, educated, and warm. He assisted me with my first coin grading experiences and turned me on to someone who was selling brand new Breen's at very good prices.

Although we had not made contact with one another since late last March, he will be missed. I envision him inspecting his collection which is now nothing but GEM material, and smiling. Enjoy my friend!! Scott

  • I did a similar thing when my mom passed away just this past November. It was the hardest thing to do because I had no idea who half the people were. It must have taken me about 2 hours to write that message but when I wrote it, I babbled on and on for paragraphs image

If this is going back to Dean, let him know that his Dad was well respected here. I never had the chance to correspond with him on a personal level, only through the message board. My condolenses go out to Dean and his family. Having seen what my mom went through, even though we expected it could be a week, 2 weeks, a month... When she finally passed, although we felt sadness, we also felt relief that she was no longer in pain.

The day before my mom died, I went over to visit with my wife and my son (10 months at the time). My mom was in pain, her breathing was bad, she could only mumble but when I brought my son over to her, she held his hand and gave him a smile. That was the last time she acknowledged anyone. That is one thing I will never forget!

Mr. Holloway was the first forum member I did business with. When I started posting items for sale on the message boards, the response was, well, lets say lukewarm (OK, I got lambasted, both here and on RCC). He purchased a 1827 Bust Half from me on eBay, left positive feedback and, to my surprise, listed the same coin for sale a month later (he took a loss on it). At the time, due in large part to the treatment I had come to expect from people around here, I became suspicious of his motives. In retrospect, considering I had about a 10 feedback rating and he obviously wasn't turning it over for profit, he must have been doing it out of a desire to help me (something I'm not accustomed to). I now regret jumping to any conclusions. He was a better man than I.
