Houston are legimate contenders!!!

Think about this for a moment. Steve Francis and Cuttino Mobley (prolific scorers) Glen Rice getting fit again and Eddie Griffin improving on last season (two great range shooters and certainly no defensive slouches.
THEIR WILD CARD:
Yao Ming: He's huge, quick and will better with experience. I think by half way through the season Shaq will have trouble with him. Yao has WAY more agility, should out rebound Shaq and will stay fit (shaq may not). AND look at the bench, Moochie, Cato to mention a few.
There are a HUGE AMOUNT of IF'S for the rockets but the potentials there.

  • Contending for what exactly?? image
  • The title, not really but I'd be very happy with conference finalist or/and winner. Tough conference though.

They are contenders for a playoff spot. They are no where near the likes of teams like the mavs, lakers, and spurs.

<<Yao has WAY more agility, should out rebound Shaq and will stay fit (shaq may not). >>

    you've been smoking pot right?
I mean.. hello? Shaq is the best player in the NBA right now, just because Ming is 4'' taller than Shaq doesn't mean he's gonna 1) contain him, 2) outrebound him
Rik Smits was 7'4'' and he outplayed him completely 3 years ago in the Finals
  • Hakeem-- i am probably the biggest Rockets fan on this board, and there is no way they're championship contenders this year. They may be title contenders in 2-3 years if the keep the nucleus of Franis, Mobley, Griffin, and Ming together coupled with the excellent depth they have. Good news is they should make the playoffs, and both NBA.com and CNNSI.com called them the most improved team in the NBA

Undertaker-- Ming probably won't "outplay" Shaq, but Ming is MUCH more agile that Rik Smits is. Smits has ALWAYS played on 2 bad feet and a bad knee, so comparing how he did with how Ming will do is completely off track. Ming, in 2 or 3 years, will do much better against Shaq than anyone else in the league will be able to. Also, Ming has 6 inches on Shaq, not 4. Shaq was listed at 7 feet since college, and just recently they raised that to 7'1" or 7'2", which is BS. Ming was measured at 7'5" barefooted, and since he'll probably wear shoes when he plays, he's at least 7'6" when on the floor

did anyone see the preseason rockets vs. spurs game??? Duncan and Robinson tossed Yao around like a rag doll and repeatedly knocked him to the floor. These two guys are great great players, but lets face it, Shaq regularly abuses them both physically. If he cant hang the spurs guys, shaq is gonna feast!

its all fairly moot anyways... the will probably put Horry on YAO since he prefers to play the perimeter.. leaving shaq to patrol closer to the basket.. I would certainly put Yao outside againt the Lakers, to hopefully free up some room for Francis and Cat to get to the hoop.
  • ALL THIS HYPE IS JUST MAKING SHAQ MAD.......I LIKE YOA MING...MING IS A BASKETBALL PLAYER.......SHAQ IS A BEAST!!!!!
IM SORRY WITH NO WEAPONS ON HAND....NO NBA PLAYER COULD DEFEAT AN ANIMAL.....SHAQ IS TO POWERFUL MAN...YOA HAS STRONG LEGS...BUT SHAQ HAS STRONG EVERYTHING...SHAQ IS TALL WITH THE STRENGTH JULIUS PEPPERS...MING IS TALL WITH THE STRENGTH OF KEON CLARK......WHICH WILL LEAD TO MY NEXT POST

I once defeated a kitten with my bare hands... does that count as beating an animal with no weapons?
  • I'm still reeling for the comment that Glen Rice is "certainly no defensive slouch." Someone should tell all of his ex-coaches.
  • Glen Rice hasn't been a factor since he was on the Lakers..

the Rockets have a good chance to make the playoffs this year, I think they are almost as good if not better than Minnesota, but there's no chance of them getting past the first round in the West..

    maybe in a few years

  • I don't believe the Rockets are even a playoff team. Too many square pegs there, not going to fit in the round holes. Mobley is too small, Rice is too slow, and Griffin is too small, respectively, to play defense at their positions, and no matter what you think of Ming, it's going to be a long learning process. If the Rockets make the playoffs, Tomjanovich should get coach of the year.
