Ebay "End Listing" then Relist no longer moves a listing to the top of a search

For years, ending a listing followed by immediately relisting an item has moved it to the top of the search heap. I would use this tactic frequently to move stagnant listings back to the top of the list so that fresh eyeballs would see them (usually after adjusting the BIN price downward). It was amazing how often it worked and items were sold. Now it appears those days are over. A relisted item gets the "New Listing" tag, but stays where it was in the search queue. No more moving to the top. Ebay wants you to use the "Promote" feature, which of course is not free (3.7% as far as I can tell). So here we have another myopic, short-sighted change that ultimately will reduce sales, which of course will reduce the FV fees that Ebay collects.
If anyone knows a way around this, please enlighten me!

Rather than just relist your coin, is it possible to change the listing title slightly and fool eBay into thinking it's an entirely new listing?

I use the "Create similar listing" function on whatever I am going to be relisting, once you have the similar listing ready to go then I end the previous listing and list the "similar listing" (which is exactly the same btw, because it autofills all the same info, and I just leave it that way)
Last time I checked, those listings appear at the top of the search results because they are *technically new items being listed...

Have you tried ending and then using the sell a similar item (instead of relisting)?
Great minds think alike
We posted at exactly the same time.

Thanks. This approach seems to work, but you have to make a small change to the title or Ebay kicks it back as a duplicate listing. No big deal. But, it does require you to do each listing individually, so you can't use the group relisting capability. Still, it's a far better workaround than actually creating new listings from scratch.

eBay "suggests" a Promoted Fee Level. You can however pick your own % starting at 2% on up.
i usually do them en-masse. i pick the ones i want from the active listing page, with the check boxes, end listings, select them from the ended/not sold page, then sell similar item, all at once. the page you land on for that has been updated and is FAR better than it used to be imo, mainly due to when you do the editing, the area you have to work with is significantly larger and the whole thing is snappier as well.
as with the entire history of ebay though, old pages are still accessible, so it is best to have some bookmarks in case the system fights back and doesn't let you access a certain page. i pretty much navigate most of ebay with bookmarks. i can't even recall the last time i was able to access the main OVW page w/o a bookmark, despite my sincerest efforts.
oops, btw, if you do the ending listings, en-masse, like mentioned above, you avoid that pesky similar item warning, obviously
Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. I will try the "en-masse" approach next time. I wasn't sure the "Sell Similar" option would be available if the listing(s) were already ended, but it sounds like it is.

You shouldn't have to make any change as long as you end the previous listing before publishing the "similar item" listing, get it ready to list but before you list it, end the previous one, and then ebay shouldn't see the new one as a duplicate because the previous one is no longer live.
This has worked fine in my experience.

Had to test this.
I ended one BIN. I then clicked on sell similar and listed it.
I then went into my ended items to delete the origin listing.
The "sold similar" item came up as a new listing.
.
a VERY important part of the en-masse process. gotta delete those ended/unsold listings once they have been relisted, otherwise the ended/unsold item section becomes unmanageable. thanks for that one EOC.
this process is good for auctions as well. i start em on tuesday, run 5 days, then after then end, i can either do a 7 day from sunday to sunday or wait until tues and relist the aucs en-masse to run 5 days again.
just to be thorough since you bring up that delete point. i'm PRETTY sure that they don't have to be deleted after relisting other than to keep that section clean and clear.
for anyone wondering if their listing is new or not, you can always check the ebay number as it should have changed.
What happened to the listings that you ended then wait for a month to relist again? Are those show up in the new listing?
after i think 90 days they are removed but sometimes it seems like the images are removed sooner.
this may be what you are looking for.
i forgot to say, if anyone accidentally deleted stuff from ended/unsold page, you can also find those listings (unremovable) from the completed/sold page. you have to go into advanced and search your account for this page. best to bookmark it for later so you don't have to go through the rigamarole again.
something else occurred.
i don't know if once an item is ended, which or if both methods (relist vs sell similar) will put a link/notation on the ended listing that the seller has "relisted" the item(s).
as a side-note off-topic, is it just me or is the buyer ebay handle NOT on the packing slip?
If someone buys from another seller's listing instead of yours because yours is lower in the search heap, sales and the fees eBay collects aren't reduced, are they?
I tested with the end list. I ended a list and relisted it manually. It will showed as new listing but not on the top of "time: newly list" search. It will be on the search list based on the day that the list was first listed.
Just relist it using the "sell similar" option.
agree. However, his phone number is there. . . nice to know.
ya. the number is good for sure but it is an audit thing when i have a lot to ship at the same time and items are similar and instead of just looking at the ebay handle on the packing slip, i have to be looking at the ebay sold item page. i'm not whining, just a bit annoying. perhaps i need to search out other print details pages. i know there are a few or just write the handle on the packing slip manually. that sound annoying. rant over.
eBay makes changes continually. Sometimes, they're helpful and sometimes not. They used to include how long the item had been listed on the page you go to when someone made an offer. I found that useful for deciding whether or not to accept the offer (new listings get smaller discounts than older ones) but they eliminated that information. Of course, I can look it up, but it was easier to have it right there when responding to offers. Oh, well...
Ebay "All Transactions" page (seller hub>payments>all transactions) tells you a lot about each sale. I have it saved as a link in my "Ebay" favorites bar folder.
ok. i did a comp of 4 different pages.
the one i generally use because it is quick/compact is the print packing slip page which fits onto 1/2 of a sheet of paper (with my settings) and the label can go on the other half.
your page is great for auditing but i can't print directly from there.
that leaves "2" options w/o digging a bit further. the view payment details or order details. payment is like your all trans page but just for 1 item, so no go. i really want the buyer address/payment total all in one space, for them and their records and for me when i go to ship. that leaves order details, which is GREAT, except it takes a whole sheet of paper, more or less, even when i use the % decrease size within the firefox option (they've since made virtually inaccessible w/o using the about:config settings).
SO, w/o diggin', i'll have to settle for your trans page for shipping/auditing and keep the print packing slip page for now.
dang. i think all-in, there may be upwards of 10 pages JUST for the packing slip/order receipt/sold info/fees pages. (not the payments section)
i looked a little deeper into the packing slip pop-up, which gives the order receipt option (nearly identical to the packing slip) along with several other tickable options on/off.
i can choose to open in adobe for more editable options but ultimately, doing it from the pop-up is pretty much the same with the way i have FF set up. if i shrink the % size too much, it gets out of alignment for some reason.
guess i'll keep the current print packing slip/order receipt option.
I print three pages for each transaction:
When done I have a packing slip for the buyer, a label for the shipment and a hard copy of the order details that, with the handwritten addition of the postage cost and the ebay fee, gives me everything I need to complete the item line number(s) in my " current inventory" spreadsheet. I then cut and paste the completed line item into my "completed sales" spreadsheet which also removes it from my current inventory spreadsheet. My completed sales spreadsheet totals give me everything I need for IRS Schedule C at the end of the tax year.
This process works best when you print a label and package only one item at a time. It eliminates mixing up items in packages. If you prefer to print labels in bulk to obtain a postal scan form it can still be done using this method, but must be done carefully to avoid mixing up package contents. First print all the labels at once and then print each order number details and associated packing slip afterwards. Then carefully prepare all the packages for shipment.
