The 1965 is interesting due to the flecks of what appears to be copper on the surface of the coin. Does anyone have any idea how these flecks ended up being present on this coin? The flecks are not on the surface of the coin. They are imbedded in the coin.

Possibly a strike-through of something. Below is my 1965 DCAM.

In that close-up it looks like it could be the result of a poor alloy and a slight, flaking lamination.
Looks like rolled-in scrap but hard to say from a photo.
Debris from sharing the hopper bins between different denominations during production is a possibility. I imagine, from the cutting of blanks to the stamping of coins, there's quite a challenge controlling the debris. Here's an example where metal flakes remain on a coin.

would it be that copper color if it were a missing clad layer error? i presume all missing clad layers are coppery color underneath?
