You will have more discussion in the US Coin Forum rather than BST.

To my eye via your photos, it looks like it should not have straight graded.

You will never NOT see all of those problems, every time you look at the coin, if you keep it. Send it back.

Yep if you are not happy, even if the grade is accurate, send it back. Not so sure I'd call it cleaned vs circulation wear, someone could have used to buy some drinks and slid it across the bar a few times.

I agree. I believe resale at anywhere near what you paid for it would be difficult due to the problems the coin exhibits. I would return it. Good luck.

If you don’t like the coin now, you won’t like it later. Without seeing the description and original photos I won’t comment on the seller and any perceived wrongs, nor will I say the coin should have gotten a details grade, but it certainly looks like there could be nicer examples of the trade out there. If you have the option to return, I would do so.

Huge difference price wise between MS and just under MS. That along with the obvious scratches, no brainer to send back.

That is not a "cc" coin, lest I see the reverse

early die state? or a "P" mint coin?

Seems to me "rare dates" get special consideration, I've seen many bright scratchy 1889cc coins

Never should have straight graded. If you have the option, send it back.

It's a CC. I only provided front photo's because the back looked very good. The coin is exactly as I said and it's holdered in a NGC holder, so I'm not concerned at all about counterfeit.

Thanks everyone. I tried posting in the other forum just after and couldn't because I already had here.

I appreciate all of the comments. Ultimately, after a full day of consideration, your opinions, and two expert opinions, I'm going to go ahead and send it back.

I don't believe it was cleaned, at least any time recently, but I do believe it's got some damage it shouldn't have in a straight grade. I didn't provide the cert number or original photos I mentioned, because I wanted to protect the seller. I think they enhanced the photos, and that's why I was so taken back, but I do not believe they were being malicious. They welcomed a return, so there is ultimately no harm, other than I'm still left with a hole where I wanted this to go.

    Thanks again everyone.

Absolutely agree with this. Which is why I wanted other opinions. It could have been just as much a mistake to return than to keep and I didn't want to make a rash decision. Ultimately, had the coin been photo'd a little more true to life, I would have had no surprise at purchase...

I agree with the others. In my opinion this coin should not have straight graded. I’m quite surprised it isn’t details-cleaned. If you don’t love it, and see an issue now, it isn’t the coin for you. You will grow to regret it the longer you look at it. And at that price point you should wait for one you love.

I think we all can agree that depending on the angle of the pic the coin looks acceptable, until it doesn't. I also think we can agree that a grade can be hugely dependent on the rarity of the coin. This is a tough one. AU details - yes. Scrubbed with a Brillo pad -- in places yes. Market acceptable -- maybe. But that is the question - not saying yes or no.

Boy your photo skills make that coin look bad. Sellers photo, now that guy can take a picture. Seriously I don’t know what that coin is worth but the numbers you tossed out there is a lot of jack. I’d look for a nicer one. I’m
Guessing there are some 55 or 58s that look nicer

Lot of slide and friction marks on that one, they really bother me. I would pass. there are enough of those out there to look for another in that high au to low ms grade range.

Glad the seller accepted return. I also do not agree it was cleaned due to the lack of uniformity of the scratches and the different directions of the scratches. Seems 'cleaning' has become an all purpose definition of an issue. Would I want that coin if I had the funds and at an AU58 or even AU55, never. Was it mishandled in circulation and maybe storage, definitely. These photos are blown up 800% and I'd assume exaggerate the scratches to appear as if someone harshly scrubbed the coin. Just MHO.
