1800 $1 Draped Bust Silver Dollar, BB-187 / B-16 Close Date Variety, Rarity-2.

I just photographed this yesterday and figured it might make for a good GTG thread :)

Interesting piece.. there's a little weakness in strike but I'm still seeing luster in the devices. I'll say XF40...

AU50 (perhaps even a higher AU) (somewhat weak strike on the reverse).

    EF45 for me too

I like the EA of this one, and the rims look AU if not better to me.

My initial, very quick glance, made me think 40, shot 45. But after looking at images of two PCGS XF40’s and two VF35’s I’m going to go with 35 (edited to add: shot 30).

Light cleaning and has retoned. Should straight grade. Solid AU reverse, obverse takes the grade down, not sure how far, though.

That is a great photograph... I would go with 40 on the grade. Cheers, RickO

I liked it at 40 as well. Lots of hidden luster in the devices... possibly a candidate for CAC?

This series tends to be graded a bit conservatively. That said, I don't see much upgrade potential here. Don't think a bean is a lock either due to the old cleaning. Nice example, in any case.

If beans didn't lock on old cleaning there would be tons of draped bust silver issues from half dime to dollar that couldn't make it into the PCGS/CAC registry. On some issues every coin on Coinfacts from top pop Gem MS to AG3 has been mildly molested in the past.

Understood. I was simply pointing out that many have reported Bust type coins getting rejected by CAC, with JA citing cleaning as the reason. I imagine it's a matter of degree as opposed to an automatic disqualifier. Now you have to send your coin in to find out! B)

He's right. Grading services will straight grade / slab Draped Bust Dollars and pre 1815 copper when coins of more recent series, like Seated coins with these problems, would be bagged.
