Fred-Is this differentiated from machine doubling by the fact that it is seen all around some letters (and not at all around others)? Machine doubling seems to be more directional with a second off center bounce of the die(s).
Collector and dealer in obsolete currency. Always buying all obsolete bank notes and scrip.
Usually DDD (Die Deterioration Doubling) is seen on the devices facing towards the rim. The flow of the metal moving from the centers outward wear at those areas of the die.
