Changing what I buy for coins

Ideas for US coins that are nice MS63 to MS65 that are better dates that cost less than $500. Certified of course.

Two cent collection is my favorite.Alot of them are in that range. Also it is a short run 1864-1873.

Standing Liberty Quarters nearly all fall in that range as long as you don't go for the FH designation. They are a beautiful design as well.

Non FB Mercs except for two or three, but that is a longish run of coins.

@coinbuf I have a very nice common date Merc with FB.
@scotty4449 Any suggestion on a better date Standing Lib quarter? I love the look of those
@blaircountycoin Any suggestion on a better date 2 cent in red or red brown?

I think a type style set is in my future.

Any Indian heads in that price range?

Late 40's to 90's Full Steps Nickels... Because they are simply beautiful imho. Especially with extra perfect steps

This seems like the wrong way to pick a direction. What speaks to you?

Why does it have to be 63 to 65? Why key dates?

You might get pleasure from early copper in VF. You might get pleasure in tokens in AU. Maybe circ gold. Commems in 66. Colonials in circ.

If there isn't a coin or series that speaks to you personally, why not put your wallet away until something does.

@jmlanzaf MS 63 to 65 are usually really nice details with minimal marks. Not necessarily key dates but a better date so it will more than likely hold its value. Some coins definitely I could never afford in Mint state. So then those I would probably go to XF to AU. I love a lot of coins. If anybody saw my current collection they may think I am CRAZY. Its all over the place as to grades and types of coins. Errors also. I figure nicer coins and 1 or 2 of each type may be the way to go instead.

For $500, most of the better dates are out. Note that the better dates are not necessarily what you'd think. For example, a 53-P in MS 63 is practically spending money, but in MS 63FS is out of your range.

This gets my vote. Collect what you want, not what a bunch of anonymous internet posters think you should.

    1917 Type 1 P/D/S in 63/64 because the 1916 costs too much! :D

  • gumby1234gumby1234 Posts: 5,663 ✭✭✭✭✭

@MasonG I am just getting ideas from other people. Of course I will only collect coins that I like.
@scotty4449 1916 SLQ sounds like a nice place to start. Beautifully designed coin.

Listen to what Gumby is saying and he seems to be gravitating towards a type set.

That's what he's saying he likes.

I collect what appeals to me... be it design, quality, history or scarcity.... I did series years ago, it was fun, but I like just buying a coin because it appeals to my personal preferences. Works for me. Cheers, RickO

I don't buy anything for coins........I buy them for me.

Well.....not exactly entirely accurate. I do buy them neat little cardboard flips with little round windows from time to time and for the coins that are special I buy them nice little blue folders with removable plastic slides where they can rest and be all comfy and cozy. They like it. Oh, ...and little red boxes to put the flips with windows into. Yes, I buy them little red boxes. They like those too.

@scotty4449 Yikes I looked and a 1916 SLQ is out of my price range in any grade. Maybe you meant a 1917 type 1?
