What magazines and newsletters were available in 1989? Could be niche stuff like EAC as well...

What major coin auctions in 1988, 1989, 1990?

Were there any major articles on coins in mainstream mags like Forbes etc...

Numismatic News, The Numismatist, Greensheet and Bank Note Reporter were publications that I was reading in addition to those mentioned above.

S.S. Central America find was announced during this period by CADG and Christies.

That is the old plain Stack's long before Stack's Bowers. Also worth looking up are Bowers & Merena; Superior; Heritage; Mid-American and probably others I can't think of right now. 1989 and 1990 were basically the peak. To see the decline look at sales from 1991 to the mid 1990's especially those lots where the exact same item is noted as being auctioned in the 87 to 90 timeframe.

As explained by @cnncoins in the other thread:

"...The market crashed at the summer LB Show in 1989, recovered somewhat through the 1990 Seattle Summer ANA, and then tanked again badly right after the show. Once the market crashed, Wall Street bailed out. It was a very slow recovery after that."

Some of the biggest effects of the crash were hitting hard in very late 1990 and 1991, rather than 1989. Many auction records were still being set in 1990. I recall the Coin Dealer newsletter at the end of 1991 said something to the effect of "glad that year is over".

Also the Coin Dealer newsletters can be found online. That will show when and how much the wholesale changed. Very interesting to look at. Still kept a number of them from that time. Coin World and Numismatic News would have lots of info, but are not available online as far as I know.

Just one of many examples of that crash is the King Of Siam set that auctioned for $3.19 Milliion in 1990 (after failing to reach a $2 million auction reserve in a 1987 Bowers sale) and then again in 1993 for around $1.81 million.

Some generics and commems may still have been higher after the crash into the early or even late 1990's than they are even now. Would have to look them up to see just what did what.
