Since I like coins, looking at old batches of coins is interesting for me... One never knows what could turn up... accumulated for years, before internet, could be a treasure or two lurking within. Have not found one yet, but never pass up an opportunity. My 'Eureka' moment is coming..... Cheers, RickO

(looks like they might have been dredged from a mall fountain or wishing well.....)
Nothing that interesting. There were a few rolls of dimes & quarters in the box not in the photo that I started with - all modern, then the cent rolls. About 50 common wheats there. I then pulled out the obvious larger sized coins, again all common but included a handful of dollar coins and some foreign coins. I then put the rest all in a strainer and gave them an ammonia bath. I let it go for a while which cleaned everything up well enough. I let them sit in the sun for an hour or two then pulled anything else interesting...which wasn't much, then off to my credit unions free coin sorter! I think it was about $100 in the end. The funniest part of this was I picked this box up at my town dump's free swap shop area. When I said the price was right I wasn't kidding! It was fun but no major treasures, just a quick $100 profit! You might be right about the fountain, I was trying to think how they could have ended up like that and it makes sense. At first glance I was thinking metal detector finds but they were mostly just rusty. I was certainly shocked to see the box just sitting there for the taking but not too much as I could make a pretty large list of the odd things I've found there. I was happy to search through it.
Wish MY town had a similar dump & swap! My other guess would have been coins found in restrooms or by plumbers over their careers, which would also account for a lot of the corrosion. As you said - - it sure made for a fun & free search!

Nah. Some beat up and crusty coins look better than MS coins.
My “friend” was looking at a bag of junk walkers and thought they would look better in MS than well circulated 😉
It doesn't look like junk to me if the price is right.
Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc
I always thought that was within the job description
Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.
If my metal detecting finds were MS65+, I would already have that Ferrari I've been saving for. Only $459,000 more to save!
On Etsy, they ALL are.
Stumbled on this box once. The price was right so I was happy. Was kinda fun looking through.
