12 Days of Christmas Carnage VII - (Merry Christmas, A stunning 1958 Don Bosseler RC (last card))

Not to sound like a broken record, but here I go again...

It's that time a year where I throw caution to the wind and clean out a portion of my unopened stash for some good old pack rippin' fun. This year the '58 cello makes its comeback once again for the next to the last time. It's getting harder and harder to justify opening these considering what even a basic pack goes these days. But, after seeing a couple Jimmys pulled this year from packs with sequencing "errors", I can't bring myself to sell the ones (2) I have knowing that it's still possible that a Jimmy lurks in one of them! :)

The group shot of the packs for this year is shown below, followed by the ripping schedule:

14 : 4 - '87 wax (Young)
15 : 2 - '82 wax and 3 - '83 wax ('82 Montana & '83 Payton)
16 : 4 - '85 wax (Moon RC)
17 : 4 - '80 wax (Nothing)
18 : 2 - '84 wax (Nothing)
19 : 2 - '81 Cellos (Montana RC)
20 : 1 - '86 Cello and 1 - '86 Rack (Rice RC)
21 : 2 - '79 Wax (Nothing)
22 : 2 - '78 Wax (Bradshaw)
23 : 2 - '77 Wax (Payton)
24 : 1 - '75 Wax and 1 - '76 Wax (Nothing)
25 : 1 - '58 Cello (Don Bosseler RC)

Scott

The Prequels:

2018 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage VI
2017 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage V
2016 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage IV
2015 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage III
2014 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage II
2013 - 12 Days of Christmas Carnage I
2012 - Christmas - 2 '58 Cellos
2011 - Christmas - 1 '58 Cello

    Day 1: 1987 Wax

Not much excitement expected on the first few days. These 4 packs yielded only some OK cards. A lot of surface print issues and many for what I call "oil" spots, which included a nice 2nd year Young.

As David mentioned above me, I love this tradition, too. It's one thing to talk about cards on this forum; it's another thing altogether to show them. I love the ripping of vintage wax as much as I love collecting it. Good luck, Scott. And thanks for bringing the joy!

I really like 87 Topps football to me it is the last great Topps football set before all the others came in. I know they stood alone in 88 as well but that set design was a real dud in my opinion.

    Day 2: 83 & 82 Wax

Two of these '83 wax packs came from a group break here and yielded mostly off center and tilted cards. A few stars showed up including a Payton, but all where flawed in some way. There were a few centered however.

Best of the first 2 packs...

The final pack of '83 wax was my last one from a Galena, IL pickup and it yielded much better cards but no star power.

All but the wax and gum cards shown below...

The '82 wax packs are the last two from a fun bag I bought a few years ago. I didn't have much hope of anything good from these as the others have all yielded poor condition (corners and centering) cards. Except for Joe showing up twice, these packs were as bad as I expected.

    Best 6 cards shown below...

    Day 3: '85 Wax

85 set could be an all time great. Absolutely love the design. But the images mostly suck, far too many head/sideline shots. That design + action shots would be a killer set

    craig44craig44 Posts: 10,540 ✭✭✭✭✭

I agree about the 85 set. like the design, but most images are grainy and out of focus as well. that is a nice looking Moon too!

That Moon card wasTHE card that got me into collecting. I had a few Walter Payton cards that someone had given me because I was a Bears fan. But then I saw that Moon Card and it has been one of my favorite sets since then. Everything you guys say about the 85 Topps set is correct. It is deeply flawed and super condition sensitive and I love the challenge. I have about 50-60 of those moon cards alone and a few complete sets. Love the rip man, thanks

    Day 4: '80 Wax

Not much in these pack this year. Most of the well centered cards all came from the same pack. A little star power but nothing great. The best star card was mulled on the edge!

Nice rips! I like the Dickerson card with the goggles, and of course Joe on the phone (leave it to Topps).

I also dig those foam pieces with the perfectly cut spaces for the cards. Must make scanning a snap (especially if one is OCD about getting the cards perfectly straight ;) ).

    Day 5: '84 Wax

Not much here, very little star power and many off-centered cards. Each pack did yield 4 nicely centered cards!

They are made from multiple layers of black construction paper cut using a computer controlled craft cutter (Silhouette).

Hows the back on it ?? Would love to pull one that nice pack fresh mine always are worse on print dots or registration, corners etc.

    Day 7: '86 Cello & Rack

Both of these pack suffered major centering issue. The cello had a few nicely centered cards, no major star power. The rack was even worse on centering, but it did contain a Rice although it was off-centered.

Love the entire 86 set !! Nice Rice !! 85/86 to me was their best thought out football that decade. Its like they mailed in designs all the other years. They should have taken Fleers queue and kept up the colors. As a checklist side collector wish the ✔ list was better centered :/
