Should a new Fenway be built ?

1970s1970s Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭✭✭

Should they build a replica, exact dimensions, exact everything except more luxury for the fans ?
Perhaps even a domed fenway ? Lots and lots of money in New England to get that done.

Just think of the prices they'd get in some kind of auction for things from the old fenway ? PWCC could broker it.
Or would fans be too pissed to bid ?

Fenway is an Icon.......leave it alone! Fenway & Wrigley are the only true Baseball Parks left.

I visited my home state of Massachusetts last summer and took in a game with my youngest son. Hadn't been to Fenway in over 20 years I'd like to think my attendance that day helped spur on the WS victory :D I am a big guy. The seats are tiny and uncomfortable. It was the best.

The answer to your question is a resounding NO

Fans at Fenway have the "luxury" of being able to see a game in the greatest baseball stadium. No more luxury needed.

Was anything lost by the Boston Garden being replaced ? That was kind of an icon too.

The Garden was a mess and required substantial changes to meet new NHL rules for facilities. The rink was too small, tunnels in the wrong place, and a million other things. And then it had too few luxury boxes and so on.

Nothing is sacred. Still can't believe that "The House That Ruth Built" was destroyed. So much history was made there. Leave Wrigley/Fenway be. Some history should be preserved.

Yankee Stadium was gorgeous once you got to your seat. There was nothing remotely nice or inviting about the place anymore once you left it though.

Well if it had been up to the owners in the late 90s/early 00s there would have been a New Fenway Park:

    https://ballparks.com/baseball/american/bosbpk.htm
    http://www.stadiumpage.com/concepts/NewFenway_R.html

But seriously, losing Tiger Stadium and Comiskey Park (because Jerry Reinsdorf threw a fit and threatened to move the Good Guys to Florida if he didn't get his stupid new park) was bad enough. :(

It already was mostly destroyed in the mid 70s. The only original parts left after the renovation was the playing field, the monuments, and one small section (I forget which off the top of my head).

Even the White House was torn down during its renovation during the Truman years (the whole thing besides the very outer shell was torn down and rebuilt)...so don't get too excited about staying in the "Lincoln" Bedroom. Lincoln obviously couldn't have been in it.

Yeah I often question my wife about that...she's very much Red Sox first and not much into basketball (she thinks it's a silly game where guys just run back and forth, back and forth, back and forth...). She said the overall interior conditions, accommodations, and so on were just really bad. Still, couldn't we have done better than a "Fleet" Center?

At least they gave it a clean break of sorts, timing the transition to coincide with the turn of the century/millenum. Tiger Stadium is 20th century Tigers, Comerica Park is 21st century Tigers.

I mean don't misunderstand me, Comercia is a nice looking park but (Tiger fans/Detroit residents here feel free to correct me if I'm wrong) compared to Tiger Stadium (not to be confused with the LSU one) there's nothing really special about it :(

I'm not disagreeing with your or even questioning your perspective, but I see it differently. Think of how many little leagues, high school, college, minor league players, and only a select few make it to the pros. And even those who make it to the pros, only a select few make it really big.

Look at professional football. After 3 years, if you haven't established yourself as an elite player, then you are replaced by a college kid because of the benefits that have to kick in after 3 years. If you look at team salaries in professional football, the difference between a star and a lineman is huge. And unless that lineman is elite, he's gone in 3 years.

So for me, I feel the salaries these guys get is justified. These guys have worked really hard at their craft

In ice hockey for example, parents are paying 10-15 thousand dollars a year for their kids for travel teams, private lessons, and room and board and meals with travel for the family.

Then if he doesn't get a scholarship, they're paying 30 grand a year to get an education and to play college hockey.

There are LOTS of costs with travel soccer, and travel baseball too.

I think these elite athletes totally deserve what they're paid. They've worked their asses off
at their craft, and we love watching them perform.

However, no big deal if you're not into it. All is good.

Aside from the salaries is the crappy work ethic and ridiculous bumps and bruises that give them days off too. Hey I totally get that they are elite athletes and all that, if I was a pro player maybe I’d act like them, not sure. Either way I’m not saying everyone in pro ball is a bad employee but it’s hard for me to put my money into going to see these guys play. I don’t knock the people that do but I remember when I was a kid and my grandparents who were regular blue collar working class could afford to take the entire family to game without missing rent for the month. Now a days? Not so much

I'll say it again. Leave Fenway alone!!!!!!

If they try to tear down Fenway, I want to see millions of fans there blocking the tear down. I'm not joking.

Edited to add: and I'll be there holding a big sign that says so you other guys can find me and meet up.

I agree. Yes, high salaries make sense because you are doing something very, very, very few can physically do.

But......the effort is rarely there on the consistent basis required by so many employers of the fans who support the teams. Imagine a "real" person getting away with this crap. Yes, there are cushy jobs, etc but nothing like this. Don't run to 1st? Etc etc Give me a break!!!

Also.....the salaries are now beyond what is justified. I am 44. When I was a teenager I used to argue that the salaries were justified due to the rare skill required and the money they generated. But nowadays, the money generated is based on these enormous TV deals and corporate sponsorships, not on the money real fans spend on tickets. Owners no longer have to really care about the product their teams produce, because every owner gets rich even if their team stinkks, because of the TV deals and how the "pie is split".

I'll say it again. Leave Fenway alone!!!!!!

If they try to tear down Fenway, I want to see millions of fans there blocking the tear down. I'm not joking.

I'm afraid the Save Tiger Stadium folks already tried that. YES, at least a couple of times I think they did a (I kid you not) a "Hands Around Tiger Stadium" sort of deal.

There's no way Fenway should ever be torn down being aniconic stadium that it is look at some of the other stadiums in Major League Baseball I lived in Tampa for years the Rays stadiums absolutely terrible as we all know Fenway sells out almost every game we're close to it the Rays sell out a few game a year to the Red Sox or the Yankees so I don't feel how the Red Sox fans including myself can feel very bad about going to a great Stadium when there's a lot worse than that that we go to

Fenway Park should be replaced, but it will never happen, unless it burns to the ground. It has caught fire twice and survived.

Having seen a number of games at Baltimore’s Camden Yards, there is no comparison. Fenway is a relic with its many obstructing girders and lousy seats down the right field that point in wrong direction.

A Model T Ford is a classic, but I would not want to have to drive one every day. Fenway Park and Model T are about the same age.

I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
