1823 1C Private Restrike, N-3, R.2, MS64 Brown PCGS. Thought to be a product of the 1860s, this private production combines the 1823 Normal Date obverse, N-2, with a reverse die that appeared on 1813 S-293. The dies were sold as scrap metal by the Mint and have survived. They reside in the ANA Money Museum. This example exhibits the lengthy bold cracks, extensive rust, and lengthy obverse rim break associated with unofficial variety. A moderately prooflike chocolate-brown example. Largely free of post-production detractions no carbon spots, as befits the Choice grade, with exceptional eye appeal for this popular restrike type. According to Breen: "The 1823 was long believed scarce enough in upper grades that when Joseph J. Mickley found the broken original obverse die among scrap metal sold by the Mint (1833), he and his friends eventually decided to make restrikes, using an 1813 reverse from a similar source." This popular issue has long been associated with advanced large cent holdings for decades. The black dot on the reverse is a reflection of the camera lens on the iphone, not on the coin.
