Goldin vs Huggins & Scott vs Heritage - Which is Best to Consign Graded Star Trek + Sticker Sets

I have a complete, 88 card 1976 Star Trek set of all PSA 8's, plus a PSA 7 graded pack, and about 6 unopened wrappers, plus the full 22 card sticker set - a mix of PSA 7 and 8's. I'm looking to consign them to either Goldin, Huggins, or Heritage Auctions, and was wondering if anybody has any input on which auction house would be better suited to get the best value out of my items? Goldin's consignment fee is 9%, Huggins is 10%, and HA is only 5%. I was also just told about vintagenonsports, which charge 0%. Any thoughts on who to go with? Pros / cons?

Thanks!

there shouldn't be a sellers fee on either. The only question typically is how much of the buyers fee do you get, but with that size consignment I doubt you could get any of it. Should be 0% sellers commission.
I'd take Huggin's for that set.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

It was actually Goldin that offered me 9% consignment fee, no Leland. I got mixed up. So you're saying that neither auction house should charge me anything? I guess I'm confused on how it works. I thought all auction houses take a percentage cut of the final sale price. Huggins said 10%, Goldin says 9%.

Best value would be obtained with a BIN on Ebay at a price you determine. It's not a rare thing and putting it in a predominantly sports catalog auction house will get very few retail collector eyeballs, and it will likely sell to a dealer bidding on the cheap for sets to bust up on Ebay. It looks to be about $2000-$2500 retail of stuff which would you would be very lucky to see hit $1500 hammer price. With a 20% buyer's premium that's $1800 to the buyer and with a 10% consignment you'll see $1350. You know what it's worth and can give it a great write-up and lots of pictures on Ebay. The whole world sees it and you will find the best buyer for it. What do you feel the value of the lot is?

You know there's a nonsports only auction house? http://vintagenonsports.com/

It's owned/operated by Tom Boblitt who is extremely knowledgeable in the art of the nonsport and just a nice guy in general. I am in no way affiliated with him or the AH, just giving a good guy a plug. Just had his first auction about a month ago and the consignments he got were incredible. Go look at the results.

Wow, cool. I didn't know about him. I'll check it out

Heritage quoted me at the lowest consignment rate. I was shocked.

  • Options

Well, Tom offered me a consignment rate of...0%. Which is awesome, I'm just worried about their reach to the greatest number of potential interested buyers. Goldin, Huggins, and Heritage do a great job of advertising their auctions. I never heard of vintagenonsports.com until you told me about them a few days ago. However, looking at their past sold, it does appear they get a good amount of $$ for their lots, so I'll have a tough decision ahead of me.

Ask the first 10 people you see today if they ever heard of Goldin, Huggins, and Heritage. Then ask them if they ever heard of Ebay. For what you're trying to sell it's a no brainer and you are in complete control of what you choose to sell it for.

So, you're implying I should just sell on eBay? I would do that, but the eBay and PayPal fees add up to 13%, so I would save money consigning the sets. Plus, I highly doubt they would sell on eBay, or at least sell within a year. It seems like high end buyers don't trust eBay nearly as much as reputable auction houses.

  • Options

Han Soto - So I should be able to consign at a 0% consignment rate + a % of the buyer's premium? I didn't know that (I've never consigned before). I didn't even realize these rates were open to negotiation.

Like mentioned in the prior post, I would contact PWCC. Their costs are typically cheaper than the 13% you pay by doing it yourself on ebay. Plus, they have a HUGE draw.

Ah, very good points. I was thinking about listing it during the National, which is a time a lot of people like to part with their $$$, but PWCC may be a good idea too. I think the sets should sell anywhere between $2k - $4k.

Also, it's Star Trek, not Star Wars, but I know another Star Trek movie is coming out, but not until 2020...I don't wanna wait that long.

It’s a common set and there’s adequate pricing data as singles and sets to support a more realistic retail value of under 3000. PWCC lists 15% on a lot like that which is close to what you’d have to pay at 13% doing it yourself. But that is auction and if the right bidders don’t show up it could easily fall through the cracks and not hit 2k. While I’m sure they will present the set very well I’m sure you as a collector who intimately knows the set could create a wonderful listing and presentation of the set which would blow anything they would do away. List it at the price you want. Heck price it at the 4K you’re dreaming about. But look at VCP and research the sale prices of similar sets to know what it’s actually worth, and take advantage of a real number offer. If any auction house threw 4K at you it’s just not realistic and they’re only trying to entice you in to consigning with them.

I've always thought that listing on ebay during the National's was not a good idea, because people aren't focused on ebay during that time. But again, I think your target audience is not the same as the National audience.

The last graded set to sell was in 2016, but that didn't include the stickers. The last graded sticker set to sell was in like 2014, so it's hard to figure out exactly what my 88 card + 22 sticker sets will bring at auction, though I'm most likely going to split them into two separate lots. I'm probably going to end up going with vintagenonsports auction house - they charge 0%. People have mentioned on here that not only should an auction house charge 0%, but that I should even get a % of the buyer's premium, but no auction house has offered me that deal. Any clue which auction house(s) might agree to that?

How much is this worth, ballpark?

  • Options

Probably around $3k, so it may not be valuable enough for an auction house to give up some of the buyer's premium...not sure

The set isn't rare or valuable enough to get 0% or part of the buyer's premium from any of the well know auction houses. Not sure why anyone would suggest otherwise.

Maybe they didn't know the value. I've found a couple auction houses offering 0% consignment fee though

I found a couple auction houses willing to consign for 0%, so I'm good with that.

So one of the 3 you named agreed to do it for 0%? If so, I stand corrected. However, you indicated in another thread you were going with an non-sports specialist auction house that 95% of the people on this board had not heard of. Since you are selling a non-sports set that would seem to makes sense however they are hardly well known.

You're doing good getting 0%. In order to get even more, your item would have to be a head turner, an item that might lead the auction or that the auction house would promote in order to get more people drawn to the auction. While you certainly have a really cool item, it probably isn't a headliner for one of the big auction houses.

No, it's definitely not a head turner. HA offered me a 5% consignment fee, Huggins 10%, vintagenonsports 0%, and Sterling 0%. I think I'm gonna go with either HA or vintagenonsports, but I got a bit of time to decide. I would go with Huggins if they matched HA's 5%, but I haven't asked them yet.

My experience is that Huggins will not cut their consignment fee below 5% for anything except a marquee item. HA has been willing to go to 0% for me. Sterling too but I've gotten killed on 1976 Star Trek there. I consigned and sold the empty 1976 Star Trek display box in vintagenonsports' auction. I would probably go with Tom but insist on a reserve.
