sorry for the play on words.

but on a serious point, gonna post some other soto pick ups that dont include the us300/hmt55 image.

and might as well start it off with the personal redemption pack pull and the fulfilled redemption card itself:

    pulled from bowman pack:

    and the fulfilled card: 24/137

love some of the panini golf cards which are very similar in design and set up.

normally NOT a fan of the unlicensed cards with lack of teams and emblem. however, the "no logos" thing is almost a dead issue with this particular pose here. a very smart move on their part.

a smarter move was to actually include soto from the get go, unlike topps or bowman.

    2018 panini prizm #14 run:

    gold - 3/10

    green - 5/50

    purple - 77/99

    blue ice - 43/149

    ruby -127/199

    hyper - 42/299

    base - 1/40,000

Were the breakthrough cards in regular Bowman product? 2018?

The redeemed card is one nice looking card.

they were. think they chose about 20 people from single a - triple a. these guys ranged from torres to acuna to soto to guerro jr. only 250 cards pack inserted cards were made of each BUT in order to redeem there were not one, but two catches. first catch was that the player actually had to be called up and play in a major league game. second catch was that your card HAD TO BE REDEEMED by 10/31/18 in order to get the replacement card. This is why you only see the card numbered to 137 vs 250.

i was chasing a ohtani rookie to go into my personal collection on pack pulled rookies and yanked this card. prior to this i had never really bought any modern or pulled one of these redemption cards. i do however remember reading the back of the card, then looking at the front again and seeing it say "juan soto single a" and said to myself "like this even has a chance" and threw it in the box with the rest of the non-ohtani cards. flash forward a few months and now he's one the hottest guy out there, certainly hotter than ohtani and actually playing.

    and here we are!

i am not 100% sure, but i believe this to be his first card that actually is garnished w/ the "rc logo".

    2018 topps on demand b&w #31, #31a, #31b set run:

    black & white - 1/1666

    sepia - 59/60

    color - 24/25

a few more unlicensed things. not a fan of the plain logo-less image. however, they came preslabbed from leaf themselves, are all jaun/juans and were dirt cheap when i snagged them a while back. the cards are actually printed on acetate or clear stock so i scanned lid down so it was evident. even then it's still not abundantly apparent but there is about an 1/8th inch clear border around the entire card beyond the color. lid down almost made them look like minis.

one thing about dipping into the modern pool is you expand your scanning skills. not too sure i'm still 100% satisfied with these. probably will try a few other settings later. being from the vintage world, i find it's a very fine line when you start tweaking with scans to alter their in-hand appearance, imo.

while he has a 2016 "1st bowman card", i think this card actually came out before. these cards dont seem to be nearly as popular as the 1st b's but they are growing on me more and more. still have to grab a gold, but the blues and greens really look the best to me and are the hardest to find in my opinion:

    2018 bowman international ink #ii-js

    green - 10/99

    blue - 59/150

I like those On Demand and Leaf. I always picked up the Now Call-Up cards on Bunt because I thought they were like the extreme degree of the RC emblem and a lot of the good ones actually ended with counts under 100. For some reason, I would forget to go to Topps.com and purchase the physical version though. I got lucky with Soto and, even though I had no idea who he has at the time, bought his physical Call-Up. I don't remember the final card count but it was much higher than the Bunt version.

Nats fan here.....not trying to give a “hot take” here, but from my perspective the kid is better than Harper is right now. So much more consistent in his approach and stays within himself so much better.

I couldn’t have enjoyed watching Soto any more than I did last year. I watch just about every game and he was the only thing to be excited about for most of the year (other than Scherzer being his usual self).

Best part about him is what a good kid he is by all accounts. Very, very easy guy to root for. (Bryce not so much....but I digress)

Really enjoy seeing all of the cards you keep grabbing of his. I thought I had gone “heavy” on Alex Bregman during the past 18 months, but you sir have put me to shame!

    Very cool collection.

Always looking for tougher PSA 10's of Nolan Arenado, Alex Bregman, Mookie Betts, Francisco Lindor, and Mike Trout.

    wow. never noticed that!

obviously don’t know, but considering its a topps on-demand product i assume there was only one print run so i would think so.

feel free to drop any soto/acuna cards here as well.

havent purchased too many acuna cards, but something tells me he will be linked to soto for quite sometime.

have tons that are pack pulled. nothing really special, but i did purchase a few of his cards

mainly the topps sp bat down pose:

    topps mini blue 3/10:

and here's the regular pose mini, green 1/5:

only seem to be a milli-second apart camera click-wise. kinda cool, i guess.

as far as card value wise, the sapphire and regular sp "bat back" seem to be all the rage.

yet, you can still pick up the same image in the holiday run for $2-$5:

    tom,

    you're absolutely killing it! congrats.

i still hadnt submitted any of mine to psa just yet. but it's crazy what these psa slabs do for prices. even on the base cards.

and that sapphire seems to be getting bigger by the day. both popularity and price wise!

luckily i got in way back when on the soto train. like to pick up some more acuna's but just tough to enter in at some of these prices on modern guys and all.

“california’s made more mistakes than yogi berra reciting shakespeare”

  • tsalems1tsalems1 Posts: 3,325 ✭✭✭

Yeah, prices are insane and it's only gonna get worse if one or both of these guys start out hot. If they do start well, the prices now will be considered a bargain. I sold 101 of the Soto Chrome Update PSA 10 and just submitted another 50ish.
The Sapphire cards are beautiful! Too bad Soto didn't have one

im kinda glad soto didnt have a sapphire. he really didnt have many cards this year which i think will ultimately make all of the '18 topps/topps chrome even more sought after (hopefully). not sure if you are holding any sotos back for your pc or not, but as a dealer i think it was very wise and strategic to make the runs/purchase/grade/sell the quantity that you did during this off-season. the iron is/was definitely hot.

you read all sorts of horror stories on these modern collectors/prospectors going all in and then ultimately tanking. mine are pc, so i could really care less, but that's the one thing that stops me from entering the acuna arena. its a murky mix adding these prices, with young players with a history of injuries already (acuna/ohtani) and then acuna entering his sophomore season being 21 and all. "21" being the key term.

regardless what happens i gotta give these guys credit for getting me back in to watching baseball and ripping packs again. im excited for this upcoming season.

as far as the golds and foils, did any of them only have horiztonal cards?

my case did not have one vertical card of either.

my blacks, blues, indys, negs, etc were all verts but not one in a gold/foil.

    just findng that odd...

I did not notice any of that. Only thing I noticed was the same run of golds in a couple cases.
