Hi all Seated Half Dime experts, is this faux drapery? Is it add value or subtract value? Coin is unc...is it a variety that goes on the holder? Is the attribution on the holder wrong then? THANKS!! RJ

The 1838 V-1 or V-1a have these characteristics
present on your piece. The whole figure is badly
    corroded according to Valentine.

for more information it would help if you showed
the reverse as well as the obv. There is an example
of this type of coin on the Heritage site, that is an
ms-65 in an NGC slab. Doubt if there is a premium
    for it. Interesting coin.

By the way, it is a Half Dime and there is a good write-up
on the Heritage site about how this happened.

Are we looking at a die clash here?
Neat coin, I just recently dipped my feet into the seated realm.

It is a V-1 "rusty arm", aka "small stars", and this is a Red Book variety that will go on the holder.

The die clash makes that raised area between the pole and Liberty's upper arm.
This particular die clash was discussed on the LSCC Half Dime forum a few weeks ago; my photo array is
    copied from the thread:
    https://www.tapatalk.com/groups/seateddimes/pcgs-apparently-does-not-understand-small-stars-t5788.html

From the reverse photo you posted, I can see it is the V-1 die marriage, the primary marker is the die crack above A2 (first A of AMERICA).

Another marker is 3-4 die pits (which yield raised bumps) in the leaves under ER.

The PCGS Price Guide suggests the "small stars" is worth 2x the "normal stars" in any grade above G-4.
    For example:
    1838 regular stars MS-63 $475
    1838 small stars MS-63 $1100
    https://www.pcgs.com/prices/priceguidedetail.aspx?ms=1&pr=1&sp=1&c=93&title=liberty+seated+half+dime
There are about 14 die marriages for the 1838 half dime, and the V-1 and V-2 are the most well known ones,
as they are in the Red Book as "small stars", although "rusty arm" is a better description.
(There is a wide variation in star "thinness" across all the die marriages and die states).
The V-10 is also pretty cool.
