1882-O Dollar gem ULTRA-DMPL or Branch Mint Proof or what???
Sorry I have no pics to show off, but I'm wondering if anyone here can help me figure out what happened to an unbelievably special DMPL or SP or PR 1882-O $1 auctioned by Stack's in (IIRC) the early to mid 80's. I believe it sold for about 5K back then, when 10% of that figure would have easily bought you the next best coin in existence. (OK, more or less, I'm just talking.) As far as I know, it never resurfaced, but I've been wrong before.

Though I recall 1881-O, I think Kevin bought it
Julian Leidman had a Morgan that he thought was a branch mint, proof, then talking to him, he had changed his mind to it being a a PL. Not sure which year, or if its this coin.
I do remember Kevin buying it, although I don’t know that it was for his own account. Maybe it was an 81-O.

He’s probably had more than a few like that. But I do remember a 92-O maybe 10-15 years ago that he really liked.

Spent about 5 minutes looking through my Krause Auction Prices Realized annual books from about 1986 back to 1982, I didn't see any high priced 1882-O listed, but did find an 1881-O. That doesn't mean there isn't an 1882-O that would be the one you are thinking of though, as there are many errors and omissions in these books or it could be in a later sale.
The 1881-O was sold by Stacks in March of 1982 for $3,500 according to the PR book. I don't have the sale's PR and the PR isn't on NNP but the catalog is. I was expecting a big write up in the catalog on the Newman Numismatic Portal but it is rather uninspiring if this is even the right one. Lot 905 on the page linked below is the only 81-O in that sale.

Just a nice PL coin.
Since you haven't seen it in hand, you have no idea whatsoever. I have. It was amazing.
