Hi. Per a suggestion by @creg, I'm starting another group participation thread. He wanted to create a "virtual collection" where we'd all work on the same set together- virtually. I suggested the ever-popular Dansco 7070 Type set.

Here's how it works. Each day will be devoted to a slot in the album (one particular type, in other words), and we'll do them in order. So on the first day we'll all post pictures of our Draped Bust half cents, on the second day we'll all post our Classic Head half cents, then we'll do Braided Hair half cents on the third day, and then on to the Draped Bust Large cent, and so on. Get the idea?

There are 83 types to complete the album.

Each day we can award unofficial bragging rights to the person who posts the nicest coin, and also to the person who posts the nastiest coin. Anything from junk to Gems is OK, as long as it is of the correct type and has a readable date.

Ready? Let's go!

I mostly use ANACS as a cheap way to get questions answered and find out if something is worth sending to PCGS. This time I sent some random stuff in just for kicks and questions answered. The dollar I pulled from circulation, the edge lettering machine seems to have slipped. The nickel was also from circulation, I’ve had it a couple years because it’s strange and needed something to put in the submission lol. The dime is an interesting one, it’s a silver proof I carried in my pocket. A larger TPG called it counterfeit. ANACS at least holdered it 😂. None of my others received the designations I wanted, so I left them out.

This was also submitted to our Host even though there was absolutely zero chance of a straight grade. Sort of an interesting coin that can best be summarized by "A coin with champagne appearances and a plain wrap beer budget"

For those that follow the 1883 Hawaiian Series, choice uncirculated Dollars and Halves are fairly tough. So many of these issues were cleaned and just did not survive in a desirable state of preservation. This Dollar was mishandled- I have a viable working theory as to how the coin was scratched. I will elaborate on my theory later in the thread, but I thought I should give folks here a chance to think about it and consider sharing their own thoughts first. Make no mistake about it... what happened to the coin is tragic and its desirability and value has been dramatically impaired. And I suspect many here will opine... "Why would you buy this coin and then submit it knowing that it will not straight grade?"

And that is a great question...and I suppose one would need to see the coin in hand first, then check auction records followed by a look at their checkbook.

There has been a significant amount of fresh mint packaged coins coming out of safes or banks with the run up in spot prices. Currently, any common piece is not really worth the effort to grade as the premiums have evaporated.

That said, there are a couple sets that still have potential value. Referencing the 1995 W Gold set with silver eagle or the 1993 Philly Gold set with silver eagle. Due to the time these have spent in the packaging, at this point, many are toned. The Philly set especially as the coins were not packaged in capsules. (Please chime in with any other sets/coins that you think are still worth a significant premium in a 70).

Anecdotally, I can't recall seeing a toned coin in a 70 holder.

Note: 70's that toned in the TPG holder excluded vs. being submitted toned.

I thought this would be kind of a fun thing to share. My daughter is starting to show an interest in coins, and half dollars in particular. She seems to like them for the same reason I did when I was 10; you just don't ever see them. About a year ago, we started going through bank boxes of halves and trying to fill a Dansco album from coins that we found. So far everything we've added has come from the bank, but I DO plan to cheat a little and buy a 70-D. It's a been a fun thing to do together, and look forward to AND dread finishing it up.

A few things I've learned:

My God did they mint a ton of 1972 and bicentennials

You really CAN (rarely) find silver in bank boxes. I think we've found a total of 4 x 90% and around 10 x 40% out of 5 or 6 boxes. Amazingly, 3 of the 4 90% coins were Franklins.

It is interesting how many mint set only coins and proofs make their way to a bank eventually.

1) 1995W Silver Eagle Proof Mintage 30,125
2) 2026P Silver Eagle Proof Mintage 60,000
3) 2020W V75 Privy Mark Silver Eagle Proof Mintage 74,709

Prices Raw

1) $2900
2) ????????
3) $350

It should be selling for higher than the 2020W V75, but much lower than the 1995W. Either way it should be a winner for those who purchase, assuming the mintage stays at 60,000. This also assumes the mint does not release another regular 2026P Proof coin that only has the 2026 date.

Here are possible impacts :
1. 3 hour waits for TSA , and possibly getting worse, in those flying from major hubs to shows
2. Ever increasing airfares due to jet fuel price & availability
3. Vehicle gas already closing in on $6 / gallon in CA for dealers and collectors driving to shows
4. War Inflation affecting hotel rates - August Pittsburgh ANA averaging nearby hotels at $250/ night ++ and restaurant meals at record highs These Pittsburgh hotel rates are the highest seen in my 6+ decades in this hobby
5. Show attendance of dealers & collectors from Europe, Middle East , Canada ( for other reasons )
and possibly China not flying to US shows
6. Reticence in auction bidding due to concern over world affairs

Will numismatic prices - particularly on higher end items ( 5 & 6 figure items ) - maintain or drop ?

No one is around to say but how did numismatic prices do during WWII ? Of course prices were a tiny fraction of
today’s levels and many men aged 18 to their 40’s were in the service.

When I found out the penny was longer going to made. I went to every bank in my town and got as many rolls of pennies as I could possibly get. When I opened one of the rolls and went through it, a certain penny really stood out to me. From the aerial view all I saw was a raised "1". At another angle it shows 1662. At another angle it shows 1962. At another angle it shows 1992. At another angle it almost looks like 1994. I've scoured the internet and cannot anything about this type error. I even checked past and current auctions, nothing pulls up. I also noticed it's a "close AM" penny. It also appears to have 2 slight die cracks on it and slightly missing the "t" at the end of TRUST. I think it's a 1992 D "Close AM" This was the only time I touched it without using gloves. This exactly how the penny came out of the roll of pennies from the bank/Loomis roll.

Can someone please shed some light this ? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks

We all have our own numismatic points of reference. And that is often shaped by the coins we seek and how we go about purchasing them. Some coins in certain states of preservation can just be significantly more elusive than others even though the coins in question may not be rare. Most collectors have budgets and collecting priorities- that's just how it is.

There are those moments when one has to just pull the trigger based on all these competing factors and buy a coin with the belief that this just might be as good as it gets. While this intro fits the other 1883 Dollar I have yet to post, the question still remains haunting to a coin that exhibits something you have never seen or may never see again. This Dollar has a large P G engraving which was likely done relatively early. This is not a recognized countermark- It could be a countermark that was contemplated by the Provisional Government after the Monarchy was basically overthrown. There is no solid evidence to support that this was some type of pattern or plan to countermark Hawaiian coinage. The best evidence is merely circumstantial in that Hawaiian Postage stamps did have a Provisional Government overprint on them. This coin was graded EF details by our host which seems reasonable; however, I would have preferred a notation of unknown countermark instead of damage. And while a countermark can obviously be considered damage, it is not always damage that should have a negative inference.

In any event, I think this coin has a sharp original look... even with a P G that creates a truly haunting question for which there will likely never be a satisfying answer.

And in all likelihood, the last GSA Morgan slot I will ever fill in my life.

When I was a teenager, in the days before grading and slabbing and accurate pops, I probably had several of these pass through my sweaty little hands but let them go...instead choosing to first fill a few easier/cheaper holes instead.

Who really knew back then how "rare" really translated into actual numbers?

PS...the rest of my GSAs are PL...but I guess I'll just have to "settle" for this!

FEEDER MECHANISM DIE DAMAGE PATTERNS 1945 to ≈1990
I have been studying Feeder Mechanism Die Damage Patterns and the types of Feeder Mechanisms in use at the US Mint in different time periods. Many folks have contributed to my efforts by providing photos of Die Damage for me to include in my Census. I thank everyone for this support and for your insight, advice, and encouragement!
I have prepared a series of articles in which I have attempted to organize and summarize my findings into an easy-to-use reference so that the most likely Feeder Mechanism causing a certain die damage pattern may be identified. The information is divided by time periods:

• 1896 to 1945 in COINWEEK 2/19/2026
https://coinweek.com/feeder-mechanisms-and-die-damage-patterns-1896-1945/

• 1945 to ≈1990
• ≈1990 to 2018
• 2018 to present

The current article in the series for 1945 to ≈1990 may be found here:

To "complete" a collection, I have to buy coins I don't want.

This is true if I'm collecting a series or building a type set.

I'm currently using the PCGS EARLY AMERICAN COINS AND TOKENS BASIC DESIGN SET (1616-1820) registry set to help me stay focused as I build a collection of colonial era coins. I was reviewing the list of coins required to complete that set and I was reminded that it contains coins I don't really want...I'm just not interested in.

What do I do?

Of course, the easy answer is don't buy them.

But what if I have severe OCD? (I do.) What if I have a strong desire to complete what I start? (I do.) What if I'm a fierce registry competitor? (I'm not.)

Do I buy cheap / inferior examples of the coins I don't want just to complete the collection?

Do I spend the money, time and effort to buy examples of the coins I don't want that are of similar quality to the rest of the coins in my collection?

What would you do?

I am in the process of putting together a 1942 and earlier proof set. I need both 1942 nickels and have just begun to look around for PR 67 and up copies. I noticed a Type 2 (the silver coin) listed at GC and was a little surprised to see the steps weren't completely full (it had 5 steps, but the bottom one was intermittent). I have no expertise on these coins and therefore don't know if the lack of 6 steps is common with these silver coins. Can anyone offer any guidance/advice?

Thanks!

There have been many threads on this topic over the years, including the $50 Kellogg and Co restrikes struck from melted down Kellogg & Humberto gold bars recovered from the wreck of the SS Central America.

After nearly a decade in jail Thompson is to begin serving a 2 year sentence on a criminal contempt charge

Plus he has accumulated $3,335,000 in a civil contempt fine

Still it sounds like his freedom will come at some future date instead of his case sitting in limbo waiting for him to specifically disclose where he hid the gold. In the past, it was reported that he said the 500 coins (Kellogg & Co $50 restrikes) were placed in a trust in Belize

I received this last week from Great Collections. It is a nice upgrade from the MS65 I had originally purchased at long Beach in 2001. I sold the ms65 a few years ago to fund part of the college costs for my son. Anyway I am very pleased with this coin and as always very smooth transaction with GC.

I'm curious if this is something currently offered in the numismatic marketplace? I've been photographing coins (mostly badly) for 10 years and I'd love to improve my skills.

Photographing graded toned coins with accurate colors and details would be the goal (as I'm sure many others would like to know as well). So it got me thinking, is there anyone that's currently offering a course to learn this skill?

This is one of my favorite tokens of all time. F.R. Behr operated a saloon/bowling alley during the Civil War and issued these 19mm copper tokens that were good for a glass of beer. An obvious play on his last name, the token has a dancing bear with beer spilling from his mug on the obverse, and a bowling ball with a pin resting on it on the reverse.
One of the coolest designs on any Civil War token, hands down!

I would not normally consider buying an expensive "problem" coin. BUT since it's already in a details holder, I think it might make a pretty cool crack-out to fill the St Gaudens slot in a 7070. I'm unfamiliar with this market, so I'm curious what smarter more experienced people might think.

It seems that decent looking AUs can be had in the high teens/low 20s. Low MS pieces in the high 20s to low 30s? What is a scratched coin worth, and how bad do we think this scratch really is?
