Hello. Just joined - first post.

I have 25-30 cards I'd like to submit to PSA (would be the first time submitting).

I'm wondering about return shipping costs. Does PSA ship them all back as a lot, or would they break them up and ship back in a multiple lots? If they break them up, do you get charged extra shipping?

For reference, I have a 1970 card (autographed), a couple from 1984, a couple from 1994-1995, and the rest from 2002 forward (most of them from 2020-2025).

I know GameStop offers PSA grading as well, and I believe shipping through them is $5 regardless of how many cards you send in (please correct me if I'm wrong).

In short, I don't have any crazy expensive cards (unless one of my Eric Dickerson RCs somehow gets a 10), and am looking for the most economical way to submit.

Also, is there a certain type of penny sleeves you guys use? I'm going to order some Card Saver 1 holders for my PSA submissions, and was going to order some penny sleeves as well. Just wondering if it matters what kind I get.

7:38PM: Note: My bad, excuse me but I'm kinda new with forums, I didn't realize I was in the wrong discussion forum when I made this post, I can't figure out how to modify it to fix the issue or delete the post. Any assistance would be appreciated.

I put a request in about three months ago with the required 5 PCGS coin numbers.
I would think this would be a popular set to have added since the recent flurry of "Privy" coins being released by the U.S. Mint in the last few years.
It all started with the V75 WWII Proof Privy, then the two MS coin Star & Eagle Privy and the three Military Proof Privy last year and the Bell Privy this year.
There are now seven different U.S. Mint Privy coins that would qualify for a Privy Set.
IMO, I would think the more "Privy Set" requests put in the better chance of the set being created in a reasonable timeframe.

Let's begin again! Once upon a time there was an idea to make a set of Topps cards smaller than they had ever been made before. It was 1975 and Topps wanted to make a big splash with even the regular topps set. Only this year they created a Mini example as well as an original sized example. Topps elected to sell this Mini set in Michigan and the West Coast. The set was an instant hit with the amazing multi color borders. With Rookie's like Robin Yount, George Brett, Jim Rice, Keith Hernandez, Fred Lynn! Star's like Hank Aaron, Harmon Killebrew, Nolan Ryan, Lou Brock, Reggie Jackson, Mike Schmidt, Johnny Bench, Carl Yastrzemski, Willie Stargell, Catfish Hunter, Rollie Fingers, Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Rod Carew, Carlton Fisk, Steve Carlton, Tom Seaver, Willie McCovey, Bob Gibson, Thurmon Munson, Brooks Robinson, Frank Robinson, Dave Winfield, Jim Palmer, Phil Niekro, Fergie Jenkins, Don Sutton. All but three of these players are in the Hall Of Fame. Excluded Pete Rose is the all time hits leader!

The set also has some pretty remarkable sub sets like the Highlight cards that start the set. Aaron, Brock, Gibson, Kaline, Ryan, Marshall, and a 3 photo tribute to the no-hitters pitched the previous year, which includes Nolan Ryan. The MVP's of each league/year since Topps began printing cards in 1951 are included. The most desirable being #195 the MVP's of 1957 depicting Hank Aaron/Mickey Mantle. Also included are the Leader Cards highlighted by yet another Nolan Ryan card which includes Steve Carlton.

These cards were very difficult to come by in perfectly centered form without print defects. Topps sold these cards for .15 cents a pack and quality control was not at the top of the list when it came to production. Some of the most common defects were: Off Center, Diamond Cuts, Fish Eye's, short cuts. Most short cuts came in the Green/Yellow and Red/Yellow examples. Any other color combo's would be fairly rare to find in a shortened version!

For every 75 Topps Mini card printed there are close to 3 of the 75 Topps regular card. With the popularity of the 75 Topps Mini Set among graded card collectors it seems the ratio is a little less than 3 to 1. Closer to 2 1/2 to 1.

I invite all collectors to post there experiences with this set. I ask that any post stay constructively informative so that the thread will remain available for collectors to view.

Happy Collecting!

Just thought I would start this because it's hard to find all the threads related to this topic. I know there are several of us on the boards working on the NFL HOF rookie set including JasP, ssgunnip, shagrotn, cmoking, envoy, and others.

I am currently at 75% on the set and cards seem to be getting tougher and tougher, which is to be expected.

I am trying to compile a list of players with probable entry into the HOF. I looked at the NFL HOF site and looked to see who has been nomintated in the top 15, how many times, and will try to add the Rookie cards of those with good possiblities. These are the players yet to be enshrined. Here are the results.

Jerry Kramer 10 times
Charley Conerly 7 times
Johnny Robinson 6 times
Ray Guy 6 times
LC Greenwood 6 times
Bob Kuechenberg 5 times
Lester Hayes 3 times
Claude Humphrey 3 times
Clark Shaughnessy 3 times
Mac Speedie 3 times
Ken Stabler 3 times

THere are 8 players nomiated twice including Derrick Thomas, MIchael Irvin, Randy Gradishar, and Russ Grimm

There are 17 players nominated once

And then there are all the players that are not yet eligible. I would like to get a list going.

Who, of these guys, do you believe will eventually get in? I know Jason will chime in because he is out Football Specialist..

Let's keep this thread at the top!!

Dave

All,

I've finally decided to collect autographed cards of all living players who had cards in the 1957 Topps set. Based on my research, 89 players are still alive, 54 are deceased and 10 are uncertain.

Given the success of the other HOF Rookie threads I figured it was time to kick the baseball one off.

When I got back into the hobby in 2003, after a 8 year layoff, I came back to a hobby I no longer recognized. This was certainly not a bad thing, but the landscape was sure different. The advent of EBay, grading, there being more versions of Topps than I could count with all my fingers and toes. After going on a quite a few buying sprees with no apparent sense of direction I decided it was time to get some focus. Besides, I got tired of acquiring things only to want to flip them so I can buy the next thing I wanted a few months later. It was around that time I found these boards. I am not a frequent poster for the amount of time I have been around, but I am an avid reader here. It was also around that time that I discovered the Set Registries. The Set Regisitries mean different things to different people, but for me it provided some much needed focus. Even though I love lists, set collecting was something I appreciated, but never really pursued. Plus I love me some variety, so seeing some of these smaller sets became intriguing to me. I had collected baseball cards since I was a little boy and a lot of the players/cards in the Post War HOF Rookie set were only something I dreamed of owning at that time. Many years later, and now those dreams are becoming reality. My set, which I hope to finally getting around to adding scans for soon, Team Longo's, is coming along nicely. I hope to finish it in the next 2-3 years, while upgrading where possible along the way.

So that is a bit about me, but let's hear from the others who love this set or anything HOF Rookie Baseball; managers, prewar, futures, etc. Scans are always welcomed; so many things to be learned from seeing other people's stuff - I am such a cardboard voyeur. If you want to discuss ebay auctions or great trades or even some raw HOF that mean more to you than a graded Mantle by all means feel free.

Looking forward to hearing from everyone

- Chris

Hello everyone,

I search from time to time about Yaz cards here and everything seems a few years old and specific to a particular card. I thought it might be fun to start a conversation about collecting his cards.

My quick backstory... I grew up in Boston and discovered baseball and baseball cards in 1977-1978. I noticed cards in '77 but didn't collect as a kid until the '78 set. In '79 the family moved to Wisconsin but I was already hooked and always stuck to my Boston roots. I met Yaz in the summer of '83 as he lived next door to my aunt & uncle. I went out for a visit of family and met him. He was kind enough to have a photo with me and signed a few cards. I've spent a little effort in the past collecting his cards and now the bug has hit me again. I'm going for 10s in '78 and newer. 9's as much as I can below that but realize that some are going to be just too tough in the basic set. Rookie will have to be an 8. With the master set, some items may be low grade just to have them. We'll see, it's a huge set.

Anyway, please feel free to post your story, why you collect Yaz or what you want/need.

Thanks everyone!
- Scott

I've always loved the look of this set, and especially like the college theme. I think for 8 years I keep telling myself this is one of the sets I want to tackle. The small set size I felt was a bonus as well. Trying to put together sets of 500-600 cards always seemed overwhelming and something I'd probably never finish.

I may be working on this for the next 10 years, who knows, maybe 20 years, but felt like it was time to at least get started. Picked up my first two tonight, so I'm officially off and running. I'm also working on a Chipper PSA 10 Topps basic set as well as a raw Al Kaline Topps Basic. But this will give me another auction to keep an eye on and see if I can add to it from time to time.

Any Chipper collectors out there? Just wondering what are the tough ones to find out there in a 10.

Also, a little more ambitious, but going to start an Al Kaline topps basic in any grade. These I'll probably be submitting myself.

All of my PSA 9's and 10's are vintage cards of mostly 1970's baseball (some football) of various star players and were graded around 20 years ago with the older-style holders which don't have new logo at the top (PSA "lighthouse logo" I think it's called). While the new holders look more modern is it worth the trouble (time and cost) switching all of them to the newer holders. Personally I lean towards no. A PSA 10 is a PSA 10 (at least I assume that's still the case) and if it ain't broke don't fix it. -thanks

I'm browsing through 2024-2025 sets and with the proliferation of parallels of every color and design, I find it nearly impossible that any collector would be willing to put together a master set of any current player. On the football side, Panini is the current license holder but Topps, Leaf and Wild Card have released their airbrushed unlicensed sets that also have their numerous parallels. The baseball side is similar except reversed. Then you have Upper Deck that has athletes in street clothes or athletic apparel. I wouldn't doubt a player like Patrick Mahomes or Mike Trout has over 2000 cards for 2024 alone that would qualify for a master set registry.

Is this how the registry dies?

Lastly, why the heck is it so hard to find a start page to browse the set registry?

Hello all, I've been a long time 1966 collector and since there isn't an official thread for this set, I thought I would start one. I still think the 66 set is under-rated, even with the boom in collecting. I will post a pic of my latest acquisition to get things going. A very tough card to find in PSA 7 or above. If you are a 1966 collector then chime in and let's keep this thread active.

Whelp - here goes!

I hope the 84D crowd and those interested will let loose on this thread. My original intent was to just list the 5 cards need to complete the basic set, but there seems to be a following that this thread may benefit. For starters, and so my original thread doesn't get lost, I need these 5 cards for completion of the basic set:

210 - Al Bumbry
480 - Joel Youngblood
482 - Mike Fitzgerald
539 - Alan Ashby
546 - Vance Law

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also check my master set - 'Summer of '84D'- Master' - for the remaining DK's and that troublesome #29 Stenhouse in PSA 9/10! PM me or email at bdavidson@prodigy.net

So, on we go...........................

There's several sets worth checking out on the 84D registry - Arny's, RVC and his monster 10.0 GPA, Dom's 'ahead of his time' 2002 and 2003 award winner - Dom passed away a few years ago and his set would be the KING of 84D's if around today - a 84D pioneer hands-down, plus others of note that are listed.

Normally these threads start out with good conversation that I hope will happen here, but it's the bottom-line eye candy, the 'show us what you got' mentality that I really enjoy. So here is some of my eye candy........................hope you enjoy it!

Orosco is one of my favorite cards and one of three 10's on my first submission. Doran was just added and #6 in the countdown to completion........

Two other favorites that are very hard to find centered.......

Talk about absolute bears to find nicely centered - Parrish was a submission; Purchased the Clancy and was worth every penny.....

Who are these guys? Gibson is placed 2 cards before Mattingly but you'd never know it; Craig Swan? Yep, he'll probably be on your want list a long, long time...........

And now..........drum roll please.................THE TWO ABSOLUTE TOUGHEST 1984 DONRUSS CARDS PERIOD (IMO)! If you want to complete the set, it's gotta go through these 2 cards !!!!! (both were submissions)

Don't be fooled - there are a host of others that'll give you fits, but hey, that's part of the fun!

So come on guys - now it's your turn to strut your stuff !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the heck! I think that it is about time to start a thread on the great 1959 Topps baseball set. I hope that a bunch of you are with me on that. So here goes.

First of all, here are links to my Master Set and Basic Set. In my Master Set, I am missing only one card in it....the Spahn Born in 1931 variation card. Other than that card, I want to upgrade 3 PSA 7's....the Hoak card, Nichols No Option Statement and Hanebrink No Trade Statement variation cards. After that, I will be 100% 8's and 9's. In my Basic Set, it is 100% complete with needing only the Hoak card to upgrade to PSA 8. If anyone knows where I can find these cards, please let me know. My email is brett8@cox.net

link to 1959 Topps Master Set

link to 1959 Topps Basic Set

I thought that I would post a few scans as well.

There are a number of very active collectors out there working on this set. Hence, the very strong prices on ebay within the last year. The Del Rice card has recently gone over a grand several times when it has been on ebay within the last few months. Speaking of Del Rice, here is mine.

Here are two links to recent Del Rice auctions......unbelievable!

POP_W0QQitemZ8811348368QQihZ005QQcategoryZ55917QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem">Del Rice Auction #1

Del Rice Auction #2

1959 Topps was the first year that I collected baseball cards. The memory of ripping packs open as a kid is one that stays with you forever. It is no mystery then why it is my favorite.

One other thing, the '59 set has its fair share of very challenging cards. IMO, there are some cards that will always remain elusive and very low pop relative to other cards graded in the set.

What amazes me is the #1 set, JTM's 1959 Topps, which is owned by John McLaren has a weighted GPA of 8.80. I can not imagine how fantastic his set must look! Whew!!!

The year was 1996. I was the father of two soccer-playing kids, a lifelong recreational soccer player and now a front-row ticket holder for the first-ever Major League Soccer season. An amazing return of professional soccer to the United States. It began with 32,864 fans at our first home game on April 27 and ended with the Championship Game (MLS Cup) being played at our stadium in a nor’easter hurricane downpour -- where DC United triumphed over the LA Galaxy 3-2, an overtime golden goal, on October 20. What a year.

In the spring of 1997, Upper Deck began selling the first national set of cards to feature Major League Soccer. These Upper Deck 1996 Inaugural Season MLS cards perfectly captured the ten inaugural teams, the players, the uniforms, the crazy logos and vibe of that first season. I remember thinking to myself, “Hey self, imagine having the first set of cards for MLB, NBA, NHL or NFL? Did they even have cards for those first seasons? I wonder if I can find that out on Alta Vista?”

I worked with a local sports card shop to find every card for ‘That First MLS Season’ -- the 1997 Upper Deck MLS Collection. We managed to find 124 of 125 cards, carefully inspected each one, and slid them into a protective album sheet to stand the test of time.

Sadly, Upper Deck found scant sales for their new MLS product. These new soccer fans, apparently, had little connection to the ‘trading card’ world of other major sports. Later that year they abandoned plans to extend the collection with an additional 50 card base set and more inserts.

So unimpressed with the demand for soccer cards, Upper Deck cancelled plans to produce MLS cards the following season. Wait, WHAT? There were no set of national cards that feature the 1997 MLS season? You are correct sir. While there were a few team-issued local sets in 1997, Upper Deck only returned with an MLS product in 1999 showcasing the 1998 season. Unfortunately, with that lag, I never regained interest in pursuing additional MLS cards. Since my mom had thrown away my baseball cards, football cards and comic books when I was a kid, the inaugural season set was the only card collection I now owned.

Ten years later I stumbled on an online seller who happened to have my missing holy grail card: the S5 Gold Signature Jorge Campos! My card life was now complete.

Meanwhile, cards began appearing on the PSA Set Registry (2011), when a collector from Maine published his 51-card graded base set. That same member (2012) added the first gold border base set and two of the insert sets. A new registry member from Texas published the same two insert sets (2018) overtaking the original registry member in the rankings. Another new registry member from Florida published a higher-ranking base and gold base set (2019). Gotta love the Set Registry.

Then IT happened. Twenty-five years after That First MLS Season, the 2020 Great Sports Card Pandemic swept across the globe. Like its Covid 19 cousin, this virus infected its host with a desire to descend into the basement and rummage for old sports card collections. I just happen to be sheltering in place as instructed by my government overlords when I rediscovered my old MLS sports memorabilia – a first-year team signed game ball, a first-year Alexi Lalas autographed game jersey, and my complete first-year MLS card collection. Apparently, I was now one of 36 million people trying to decide if they should send their sports cards off to PSA for grading.

I scoured YouTube and the PSA Forums to discover how collectors evaluate and ready their cards for grading. While I had hoped to borrow my friend’s electron transmission microscope, I opted for a bench mounted magnifying glass, hi-powered light, and some archive gloves. I carefully reviewed each corner, edge, and angle of every surface, grading them on a 1-10 scale in a spreadsheet for every card. Once completed, I readied the entire collection and shipped it coast to coast from Boston to sunny downtown Newport Beach on August 15, 2020.

After an astounding 45 weeks, at only $9 per card, my graded collection finally returned home – where I waited an additional 24 weeks for the last two sets to be added to the Set Registry. In the end, I’m glad to have made the journey. I’m also grateful to have the only complete PSA Graded, 125 card, 1997 Upper Deck MLS Collection, featuring 15 Hall of Famers and all five of the rare Gold Signature cards. I’m happy as well to see how interest has grown over the years, with more collectors and collections being added to the PSA Set Registry.

As for these cards, they bring back tons of great memories with my soccer playing friends who shared tickets and tailgates to those early games. It was also great fun meeting so many of the very accessible 1996 players at games, season ticket holder events, and supporter group meetings. I used those early years to get a base set of cards autographed by those 1996 pioneers of American soccer – which are now slabbed and authenticated by PSA!

As for MLS, it’s flourishing in the upcoming 31st 2026 season with 30 teams – 27 in the US and 3 in Canada. MLS momentum should build even further as the FIFA World Cup returns to the global stage in the summer of 2026, hosted by the USA, shared with Canada and Mexico, to be viewed by a projected six billion people worldwide!

Wishing you all the best in your own collectors' universe!

Hi there - I saw this thread and figured I'd ask the question I've been trying to answer for ages. I find whenever I look closely, especially with a loupe, at a 1981, 1982 or 1983 topps psa 10, the edges are often meaningfully beat up. I know they aren't meant to be perfect to qualify for a 10, but I'm curious if anyone has come to understand what the standard is for a PSA 10 edge in these sets that notoriously chip? Many thanks in advance!

Just curious if anyone else has ever had an athlete from any sport notice your set collection of him and contact you to purchase the items from you? I had a guy make an offer and buy out my registry set of him a couple years back since he figured it would be an easy way to get most of his own cards in one shot. I suppose it makes a good deal of sense and thought I'd ask if it happens more often than I realized?
