For those that are already in I forgot to add 89 upperdeck and bowman it would make the total 74 instaed of 70 and 32 packs instead of 30 does this sound ok with everyone. PLMK
Gary

Update:The consensus seems to be add the 89 ud and bowman so changed it officially now 32 packs all major card companies accounted for. Plus hopefully someone pulls a sweet ud griffey.

I thought it would be fun to post some nice cards for circa 1989, since this is the proposed "first year rip"

Stars like, Schmidt, Rose, Brett, Carter, Griffey, Ozzie, Maddux, Ripken, Winfield, Sanberg, Eck, Dawson, Mattingly, Clemens, Gwynn, Yount, Bonds, [Brock, Aaron, i.e., 1989 Topps #'s 662, 663, "Turn Back The Clock cards], Fisk, Robinson, more!.

Above are some of the 1989 Topps cards I highlighted (...then we got '89 Donruss, UD, Bowman, Fleer & Score too? Wow!).

...plus 1989 Rookie cards like: Curt Shilling, Ken Grifffey, Jr., Randy Johnson, Gary Sheffield, John Smoltz

And the year 1989 is only the first scheduled rip? This should be tons of fun!

So, here is my contribution of a nice 1989 scan:

Hey Junkie.......

I almost forgot that i do have one issue that may prevent me from getting in on this............This is the kind of package ( size wise) that is routinely shipped out by BBCE via UPS ground.................I do not live in the continental USA ( US Virgin Islands instead)........UPS ground is not a shipping option to me.................USPS is the ONLY option to me............I , of course, do not mind paying more for my shipping, but at the same time do not want to "put a snag in the works" and/or create anything other then smooth sailing for yourself.

Regards,
Jami lostdart58

I simply can't believe there are still slots left. When Junkie made the initial post in the other 80s rip thread I was literally nervous that when signups began I would miss out because it would fill in about an hour. At roughly $2.33 per pack I don't understand how anyone can pass it up. There are so much that I have never ripped like 80 Topps, 84 Donruss, 85 Fleer, etc.

Adding the Donruss and Fleer are even better than the Topps because all of those sets had only 660 cards in them as opposed to Topps' 792 so the colation and odds we'll pull at least one the big cards (three Clemens RCs, 3 Mattingly RCs, 3 Ripken RCs, 3 each of Boggs, Gwynn, Sandberg, 3 Cansecos, 3 Bonds including a nice 87 Fleer issue, etc.)

Hell, I even like the '88 Fleer set. I wouldn't mind pulling a sweet Mark Grace RC. The great thing about adding the Donruss and Fleer is that it gives those intial years (87-89) a little more of a boost. I mean, which would you rather rip -- 87 Topps or 87 Fleer? No brainer. Who knows, maybe we'll snag a Ripken card in the 89s?

I'm so excited for this that I'm fighting the urge not to just buy the remaining slots myself because the deal is just too good to pass up. Thanks again to 80sJunkie and Steve Hart for making this possible.

Arthur

Edited to add: I forgot all about the 89 Upper Deck and Bowman! Oh man, I can't wait!

I think a little too many pack rips going on at the same time may be the reason......

I see what you're saying lostdart. I think I just figured that even with people getting caught up in all the rips we'd still fill this one pretty quick just because the cost was so relatively low for the amount of wax we get in return. Plus, with at least 3 packs from each year you really improve your odds of pulling one of the respective years' big cards. From '84 - '89 the addition of Donruss, Fleer and Upper Deck really improves the quality of the whole rip.

So junkie, ( sorry i do not know your name)

If I may be so bold and for all of our benefit, please explain how all this is going to work..............You will have all the boxes in your possession and will be doing the mailing yourself?? Do you have all the boxes in your possession at this time?? ...........or perhaps picking them up when you travel to BBCE for the 75 box break.

You sure you have enough S/H charges built into the price per person??

Please be assured that I have all the confidence in the world about this .....just being the devil's advocate and making sure all bases are covered.

Your efforts are appreciated...

Jami

i was wondering what everyone thinks. What is the ONE card you would be happy with pulling even if every other card from all the other packs is crap. Mine is probably the 89 griffey UD. I have never owned this card and it would be sweet to get it pack fresh! What about everyone else?

Hmmm ... excellent question.

I don't think I can pin it down to just one but if I got any one of the following I would be a happy camper.

'89 UD Griffey
'86 Donruss Canseco
'85 Topps McGwire
'85 Clemens (any)
'84 Donruss Mattingly
'83 Gwynn (any)
'82 Ripken (any)
'81 Valenzuela
'80 Topps Henderson

I think I'm lucky in the sense that there are a great deal of cards that have virtually no monetary value that I would really enjoy pulling:

'88 Fleer Mark Grace
Any '88 Greg Jefferies
Any '87 Bo Jackson
Any '86 Clemens
Any '83-'85 Wade Boggs
'87 Donruss Mike Greenwell
'85 Topps or '86 Donruss Barbaro Garbey Garbey (no, that's not a typo. His full name is Barbaro Garbey Garbey )
Any Dwight Gooden RC
Any Daryl Strawberry RC
'82 Topps Lee Smith
'83 Topps Frank Viola
Any '85 Eric Davis RC
'87 Fleer Will Clark
'89 Donruss Curt Schilling

And a host of others. What can I say? I'm easily pleased. Most of this stuff -- if not all -- I haven't ripped since it came out so I have this tendency to root for the pulls I wanted back then.

Arthur
Any early-80s Jim Rice, Carl Yazstremihoffdhuuohski, Fred Lynn

1980 Henderson. Never opened any of it, about the only 80s set I don't have.

Also some error cards. An 88 Comstock White, or an 89 Ripken.

On that note, just how common are those 88 topps errors? Maybe that is a set that should be collected more if the errors are hard to come by.....even though the print run has one hundred billion quadrillion (dollars).

The comstocks were fairly easy to pop back in the day..alot easier than the Ripken FF card...
There were also the Eddie Murray and Mark McGwire leader errors (or corrected variations ) at the start of the set '88 too...

PS....when are these things going out?? I NEED to rip!!

'88 Topps also had an Al Leiter RC error/variation that I can't quite remember.

From the last 80's breaks, I picked up a few good cards but not any of the big ones if I remember right. I'd like to pull a pack full of centered '84 Donruss cards that I need to complete the set with!

The funny thing is that I'm actually really excited to crack some of the less expensive stuff. Sure, the highlights will be the '80 Topps, the '85s, '82s etc. but I loved the '88 Fleer as a kid. In fact, I really like just about all of the Fleer products from the 80s. I sure would be happy to pull a nice Mark Grace Fleer RC. I'm a BoSox fan but the '89 NLCS between the Cubs and the Giants with Grace and Will Clark putting on a clinic was magnificent to watch.

If I could yank a Clemens RC, '87 Donruss Greenwell and a Valenzuela RC I'd be real happy.

Sick, I know.

I've actually got a couple of autographed cards of his ('87 Topps & Donruss, if I remember right) from Greenwell. I attended a show where it was Raphael Palmeiro and Mike Greenwell signing autographs back in the late 80s. That '87 Donruss Greenwell was one of my favorite of the set as well!

We're all sick.

By the way, please forward all '84 Donruss cards that are unwanted to me!

Okay. Everyone was thinking it and a bunch of you had to say it.

Arny, unless I pull a major star or Red Sox my entire pack will go to you (no matter how gem mint they are )

80sJunkie, if you need to ship and then re-ship after you get the '81 Fleer just let me know what the additional s/h costs will be and I'll gladly fork it over. I already feel as though I'm getting these packs for a deal so a few extra bucks are meaningless. Thanks for doing the legwork.

Arthur

PS. Go see THE DEPARTED (I've already seen it 3 times and I'm going at least once Mon, Tue and Wed )

Edited to add: No, I didn't work on it or have any affiliation with it. The residuals will not go to me. It's just that good.

Update shiped out everyones packs today. Only missing the 81 fleer pack. Seems there was a bad storm in new york and da cardworld is temp shut down so so as that box arrives i'll get that out.

The Rip Schedual. Well I'm hoping everyone gets there cards by this weekend. I figured we can start of sunday with a bang and open all the 89 stuff. Then each weekend we could do Fleer on Fridays Donruss on Saturdays and Topps (Score and Mystery Packs) Sundays
How does this sound

Ahem. Mystery packs? Do tell.

Now I definitely have to place an order with BBCE (see my thread). There's no way I can sit and look at all those packs without something else to rip.

80sJunkie, that schedule sounds fine. I also wouldn't be opposed to breaking it up throughout the course of a week so I don't have to wait until the weekend.

Also, I'm PayPaling you a couple extra bucks for the re-ship. I don't want to hear any crappola about it not being necessary or nothing either. No matter how small and cheap the package will be it still adds up over 36 people. So either post the added s/h total or I'll just guess.

Thanks again for hooking this up 80s.

Ok art you twistin my arm with bubble mailer it will only be a buck to ship the pack. I just feel bad I didn't have all the boxes at once. Though this waiting almost 2 weeks for a single box i think da cardworld is on my not so great list

Bullcrap. It'll cost you at least $0.70 to ship and the bubble mailer (if you're Mail Boxes Etc. is anything like mine) will run you about $0.80. I'm PayPaling $2. After PayPal takes their $1.45 out of it you'll still be in the hole.

It's ok gem I will make sure you get your 81 fleer pack. I started this rip and i will make sure everyone gets every pack. Art (we love you man) just dont take no for an answer. Soon as i get the 81 fleer box from da card world i will get them out. plus when i figured in shipping some cost more some cost less so theres still enough in the shipping pool to mail out all the 81 fleer packs so dont worry.

Oh, wait. I opened it. Looks like it is there! Sportsflics......oohhhh, ahhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I kind of did my own 80s break with some Topps and Donruss I got off Ebay last week. Didn't pull anything great in about 35 packs, but some VERY nice conditioned cards. My 85 donruss that I opened seemed to have chipping. This seems like a TOUGH set. The rest were in pretty great condition. Best 2 cards were pry a Boggs RC and some Roses and Ryans. Got 2 Ryans in one pack. I'm liking the 82-84 Donruss. They came out in GREAT condition. The 81 Donruss gum ate through half my pack. I can post scans next week. Gotta go to the Nebraska v. Texas game Saturday.

Thanks 80s. Just had to flip you some crap.

Oh, I have 1 78 pack and 2 79 packs.....really don't want to rip em.....but what should I do with em?

Oh.....and can someone PM me or post instructions on getting wax off the FRONT of a card? I'm guessing the gum stains and wax stains on the backs of the cards are pretty much 'stained'.

When we sent out the wedding invitations, we dropped them at the PO that is less than a block from my place here in Chicago. My cousins in L.A. got it in 3 days and the one we sent to us, that litterally had to travel a block got here in 5 days. There is no rhyme or reason to their madness. Thankfully it is cheap.

The eagle has landed in beautiful, scenic, south LA...

I was the proud recipient of the '86 Donruss Box...

Sportflics???? Yeah, baby! They suck, and they're ugly, but man, does that bring back memories. My first packs as a kid were '86 Topps, and then I think I spent an entire years' worth of lunch money on '87 Topps. Sportflics were only available at our one card shop. They were "a treat." Awesome, 80s.... Those weren't part of our original deal, were they?

I saw the '89 Topps cello.... What is the other celloish pack that was in there?

Thanks, zef.

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure. I didn't dig through my whole box yet... Is that our 83T pack, or is there an actual wax pack in there?

And is that our only 89T pack, the cello?

Well I got the 83 michigan test packs instead of wax i thought that would be a nice surprise. Also the 89 is not a cello its a 15 card pack and 36 packs to a box just like the wax. Did some research and asking around seems it was a test pack in 89 kinda like the 83. except they were only sold on the west coast. So the 83 and 89 are both test packs Kinda cool.

This is pretty awesome, guys. I have to say that I'm more than a little surprised at how my 80's Topps wax rip has ballooned. It sure is fun to watch!

Ok i cant hold it in I must confess. No I didn't open any of my packs for the rip schedual.

The 83 fleer boxes actually have 38 wax packs so when i got everybodys ready i set the extra 2 aside and forgot about them. While I just remebered them and staring at them saying rip me now. so I did I'm guilty.
Heres what was in one of the extra 2 packs but i didn't rip my fleer pack for the rip i'm being a good boy. maybe there will be another one of these in that one too.

Hopefully it a sign that were gonna have a lot of fun ripping these packs

remeber we start sunday with the 89 upperdeck I have the schedual posted at the beginning of this thread incase someone forgets what day we are on.

I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow morning, so I'm going to have to rip the '89s now (I work this afternoon).

I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow too. Yeah. That's it. That's the ticket. Vacation. In fact, I'm gonna be gone for about a month too. Yeah. A month. Looks like I'll have to rip 'em all now. Yeah, all of 'em.

Well, its officially 10/22 here in Chicago so I thought I'd start this sucker off.

You right coasters are lagging!

Not much to speak of in the 89 UD pack.

Here are, (gulp), the highlights.

Eric Davis- In 89 I'd have been pumped about the Davis. He just came off of 3 years of 25+ HRs(back in those days that was an accomplishment). His 85 rc card pretty much topped out areound 89.

Tony Chance - The big Rookie! He is the son of former major leaguer Bob Chance and the Pirates expected big things out of him. He never played a game in the majors and this is the only card that was ever produced of his.

Harold Baines - My old man was a Sox fan, so I pretended I liked them. I'd have been happy to show him this in 89 as the Cubs(my team) as the Cubs won the NL East crown and were 92-63 and the Sox were in the cellar at 62-92. Who knew he would play until he was 42!? Also, he played for only 5 different teams but was traded 7 times. Talk about GM's favorites!

Dave Draveckey- This picture was taken before his arm litterally fell of while pitching. Poor guy.

Here are my'89 UD:

I'm a diehard Cards fan (since '85, baby!) so seeing a Coleman first card was a nice start.

The highlight of this pack, though, was definitely the Rolando Roomes. I have absolutely ZERO idea who this guy is/was --- but the back of the card was great:

"After nine years in Cub's farm system, Rolando finally made his major league debut in '88. The call-up to the big club came after this speedy Jamaican had put together back-to-back solid seasons at Double-A and Triple-A. He hit .308, 21 HR, and 95 RBI for Pittsfield in '87, and followed this with .301, 16 HR, 66 RBI for Iowa in '88. There could be room for Rolando in Chicago outfield in '89. After 2,988 minor league at-bats, he certainly does not need any more seasoning."

I decided to check the baseball almanac to see how our beloved Jamaican fared in the bigs:
He ultimately had 315 AB's in '89 (for the Reds, though, in trade for Lloyd McClendon) and hit .263 with 7 HR, 34 RBI, and 12 SB

By 1990 he'd already hit his peak, however, as he only was given another 40 or so AB's, had an average of .227 and was released.

Rolando, good buddy, at least you got a shot after all of those minor league AB's!

My entire pack:
- Rolando Roomes
- Carlton Fisk
- Vince Coleman
- Tim Wallach
- Pat Borders
- Jody Reed
- Rod Booker
- Mark Gubicza
- Jerry Reed
- Jerry Browne
- William Brennan (Rookie Star)

I couldn't be happier getting this card! I was 10 in 1989 and still have the 89 fleer rookie that I pulled from a pack that year, but I never got the upper deck. The card is off center, but I don't care! I have wanted this card since I was 10, and I can't think of a better way to get one then to pull it from a pack myself.

1989 Upper Deck

Nothing amazing, but here are the goods:

14 Mike Harkey RC
39 Dave Dravecky
56 Rick Rhoden
209 Scott Bailes
236 Paul Zuvella
287 Ron Oester
348 Timmy Jones
362 Todd Stottlemyre
417 Mike LaValliere
427 Shane Rawley
507 Bill Pecota
563 Rick Aguilera
579 Mike Stanley
643 Gene Nelson
678 Will Clark SF Team

This is the first card release I can remember with excellent quality control (great paper stock, consistent gloss, sharp printing, clear photos, good centering, no wax/gum stains, etc.).

Budding wax pack collectors should pay close attention to the seals and folds of the wax packs you have. Since these boxes come from Steve, we can basically assume they are legit, and you can learn a lot about how to pick out legit packs from looking closely at them. Pay special attention to the roller seals on the back and hold them under light and look at the reflection of the roller seal. If you want to learn to spot reseals, buy something from overtimecards on eBay. I'm disappointed (though not surprised) that eBay has let such a crook become and remain a power seller.

Here's 1989 Topps...

Yikes. I do have the market cornered on Tigers catchers, and I think that Matt Nokes would have been pretty big back in the day...

I hope Greg Harris held on to those shades. They'd be "cool" now.

You can see the stark difference in quality between Topps and UD. I thought Topps had a decent run from 83-87, but started getting lazy with the 88s....

Well no real highlights from either of my two packs for the first two days. All of the cards would not be gradable due to corner damage on each from both the UD and Topps packs. At least I didnt pull a Griffey with a nice wavey corner.

Wasn't the 89 UD Dale Murphy a reverse negative? If so, did you get the backwards version or the corrected version?

That's the corrected version. The error had the image reversed so the "A" and the "braves would have been backwards.

Hey guys,

Tough times so far. The highlight of my '89 UD pack was a Mike Smithson (Red Sox)

I did pull a Will Clark out of my '89 Topps pack though. I'll post scans if anyone wants to see them that bad.

I'm actually kind of glad these '89 packs are so horrible ... means the universe will correct itself for me when we get to the good stuff ... right?

"best" of the '89 Topps:

Remember how big of stud Matt Williams was back in '89?
... and look at the other guy ... named after an injury -- poor guy

best of '89 Fleer:

I'm a HUGE Willie McGee fan ... very underrated!
... and gotta love Blackjack ...

I do really love the look of the '89 Fleer ... I was 12 back in '89 (born the same year as Zef in fact --- 1976) and distinctly remember buying nearly all Topps (and A LOT of it) --- wish I would have gotten my hands on more Fleer!

Not bad so far. I would be very happy with a consistent run of Ryan, Clark and Greenwell throughout this rip.

My scanner sucks dirty hippo ass so I may have to switch up to group-year scans for the rest of the '89s and '88s. I don't have a fancy-schmancy scanner does the magic black-background scan like Zef's () so I have to use a piece of black construction paper. This is what happens when you spend all your money on cards and DVDs. Let this be a lesson to all of you.

Actually, those are '89 Fleer X-Fractors. Yeah, I bet you guys didn't know they started doing those back then. Well I pulled 'em and they are true 1/1.

I even nabbed a special a special gold-foil border Nolan Ryan in my '89 Topps pack. I'd hate to think of what some scumbag seller's on eBay would do if they had scans like this ...

"1989 Fleer Nolan Ryan X-Fractor ERROR 1/1 PSA 10?"

Well my Fleer pack was your run of the mill type. A few stars (2 HOFers) and a few more commons.

Don Robinson
Dave Bergman
Orel Hershiser
Mickey Tettleton
Bill Doran
Dennis Eckersley
Dave Winfield
Hal Morris
Greg Harris
Jeff Russell

I always liked that Fleer would have some season highlight cards at the end of the set. I still find that I like them.

I opened two Fleer packs. They were almost identical collation. Generally this would be bad. However, in this case it was good because they both contained Billy Ripken cards. It seemed strange that one was the FF and the other was a black box. Here are the best of the two packs. In addition, I opened the two Donruss packs. The best card was Biggio. It was a lot of fun opening these packs.

It was always very rare to get duplicate cards in Fleer boxes from that era. It's strange that you got 2 Billy Ripken as I also pulled a Ripken black box card in one of my packs.

Well, my "Yikes" streak is at three consecutive packs now. The "star" of this pack was the Andres Galarraga MVP, sad to say. Andres, while not a HOFer, was a hell of a player for a very long time.

That Allen has 2 versions. home as Syosset or Saratosa.

Odd about the FF and BBox in same box. I pulled a BBox and saw cut FF in same box before. I think it was BBox print run and a FF was throw in intentionally like the saw cuts appear to have been done. Also Heath/Brookens corrected seems more rare so they fixed it real late, I think.

That is interesting about Fleer adding the FF to the corrected boxes. If that is the case (and it sure seems like it) then it would add credibility to the fact that the ff was probably a marketing gimic rather then a true error card. Another option is that it started as a true error card and morphed into a marketing gimic.

Not to hijack, but I agree. I have 2 saw cuts on unopened racks and pulled one. I have seen a few other saw cuts on racks and know of plenty that were pulled. The collation was different each time which means they were put in by hand. Fleer said a few saw cuts "slipped" in. I disagree. Theres quite a few out there. Plus I have saw cuts in FF,3 scribble versions, white scribble and Double Die. MAny will say teh saw cuts are easily faked but I have 2 versions on rack packs and have pics of a few of the others. I know many walked out the back door and were hid in bra's but many are in packs. Well wax and rack as far as I know.

Here's my '89 Donruss:

Was never a huge fan of Will the Thrill... but I'd say at least 2 out of every 3 friends I went to school with at the time loved the guy. As for Grace, he's a class act --- and it pains me to say that being a die-hard Cards fan.

blindflyer, one of my fondest sports memories as a kid was the 1989 NLCS and the hit-for-hit battle between Clark and Grace.

105 Danny Tartabull...He has a shout out to George Costanza on the back!

281 Roger McDowell...He has a shout out to Jerry Seinfeld on the back. The second spitter.
345 Rich Gedman

343 Danny Heep...He was set to go to architectural school after the released him in '86. I wonder if he interviewed with Art Vandalay.

What is really hitting my hard, however, is the realization that I'm getting old. I'm still a month away from turning 30, but this bust is really taking me back to my childhood. Check out the BACK of the Grace & Maddux cards ----- look how young these guys were back then!

Thanks again, Gary --- we're only at the '89's but already this bust has been a lot of fun!

I think I got a Pete Rose in every pack I cracked, except 80 topps. 81 Donruss, 81 Fleer, 83 Fleer, 83 Topps, 88 Topps. Nothing great, centering wise, but it was fun to get all those Petes. My favorite card I got was a 1982 Topps Garvey that took me right back to buying boxes for $9.90 at Smart and Final back in 82 and opening them in my parents room. The Garvey will 9 or 10, so that is a bonus for this Dodger fan!

I would do this pack rip again in a minute, just let me know.

My 88 score cards...

I noticed that I had 8 national league players. 6 of which were photographed at Wrigley Field. Was score on a limited budget and had a Chicago based photog for NL players?

I then went back to look at the other cards we ripped and the only other that I noticed some consistency was 89 Bowman. 10 out of my 12 cards look like the pictures were taken in Spring Training.

I ma have just thought of a new registry set. Cards with the pic taken at Wrigley. What did I just do?

Yeah, that about does it for me with the '88s. Nothing else to report. But, from here on out this should be quite interesting. I can't wait to rip the '87 Fleer. C'monnnnnnn WILL CLARK!

<< The missing 81 fleer packs went out this morning >>

Also, something to think about when everyone rips their '87 Fleer ... if you open the pack and Will Clark is the top card you're also going to get a Bonds. I remember this from '89. I ripped a bunch of '87 Fleer trying to get Will Clark's RC and on at least 4 occasions I got one right on the top of the pack. Every time there was a Bonds further down.

Back then, the Clark was going for $20+ and the Bonds was $1.50. How times have changed

Arthur

PS. I'd still rather pull a Clark

rana, those Sportflics scans are really really cool.

Thanks for sharing.

And how sick is it that some of you are posting scans of 1988 Topps and Score baseball while others (myself included) eagerly await the next batch of scans? I think PSA has us right where they want us .

It's 1987 Fleer time! Unfortunately, I didn't pull any major stars, but I did pull a couple of rookie cards....

....the rest of the pack goes like this....

Padres Sticker
Garry Templeton
Greg Walker
Mike Young
Julio Cruz
Greg Minton
Neal Heaton
Roger Mason (PSA 9 candidate)
Don Robinson
Rick Burleson
Leon Durham
Jim Presley
Jay Howell
Juan Berenguer
Dave Smith
Moose Haas

.....so, there you have it! Fun to open these...lots of good memories! But, I don't remember the centering problems being this tough. Left to right problems on most of the pack and only two cards (Moyer & Mason) that are 9 candidates, IMO.

Well, I finally got to rip some packs today. Results. Thankfully no one in the 87 Donruss pack as all cards with OC 90-10(LR). 87 Topps was good. Cecil Fielder and Nolan Ryan. Sportficks not bad either. I got a Cecil Cooper, one of my favorties from the Brew Crew.

My '87 Sportflics yielded....

Card #66 - Pat Tabler - Cleveland Indians
Pat, an aggressive fastball hitter, loves to bat with runners on base and, best of all, with the bases loaded. He hit .340 with runners in scoring position in '85 and had six hits in seven at bats with the bases full. In Pat's first three seasons with the Indians, he batted a major league leading .629 (22-35) with the bases loaded. In 1986, he had his first .300 season in the majors as he finished fourth in the league in batting. He also was named Player of the Week in late August (.593) and led the A.L. in hitting in August (.463).

Card #162 - Bill Doran - Houston Astros
Bill, in only his fourth full season in the major leagues, has become a leader of the surprising Astros and was considered by some to be the team's most valuable player in 1986. An exceptional defensive second baseman with soft hands and good range, he has excellenet speed on the bases and is a disciplined hitter at the plate. Bill led the Astros in runs, stolen bases and walks in '86 for the second season in a row. He is an intense competitor on one of the season's better teams, yet hardly anyone knows about him. "If it weren't for Ryne Sandberg," said one opposing coach, "Bill would be an All Star second baseman in a walk."

Card #196 - Outstanding Feat By Baseball's Top Players - 1986 Season Highlights (Bob Horner whacks four homers, Roger Clements strikes out 20 & Joe Cowley pitches a no hitter!)
Bob became only the 11th player ever to hit four home runs in one game on July 6 against the Expos. Despite his heroics, the Braves lost 11-8. Bob's first three homers were hit off of Andy McGaffigan - solo shots in the second and fourth innings and a three-run homer in the fifth. After fouling out to first in the seventh, he smacked another solo homer off of reliever Jeff Reardon in the ninth.
Roger set a thrilling major league record when he struck out 20 batters in a Red Sox 3-1 win over the Mariners on April 29. The old mark of 19 was shared by three future Hall of Famers - Steve Carlton (1969), Tom Seaver (1970) and Nolan Ryan (1974). Roger struck out the side three times and his eight K's in a row (fourth, fifth and sixth innings) tied an A.L. mark. He had two strikes on six of the other 10 batters he faced. In all, Roger threw 138 pitches, 97 for strikes.
Joe tossed the majors first no-hitter in nearly two years (Mike Witt's perfect game on the lasty of the 1984 season was the last) on September 19 when the White beat the Angels 7-1. It was the 178th on the all-time list and the 13th in which the losing team scored a run. Joe struck out eight and walked seven, while throwing 138 pitches - 69 for strikes and 69 for balls. "His wildness is what made him so good" said Wally Joyner. "He either walked you or you swung at a bad pitch."

....figured that I'd include what was on the back of the cards since the scans wouldn't have come out that good.

Thanks Tom!

I've got some catching up to do. This rip is great. I love pulling the cards that are "worthless" now but were prized gems back when I was a kid. And how great were the Topps gold cups? As a kid, any time you pulled a gold cup or a future star it always made it into your binder.

Didn't Worrell win NL ROY?

Indeed, it was a lot of fun when I started collecting my 1980s sets (that was my original goal) and getting, for example, that b/w 1990 Score Bo Jackson card that used to go for up to $10 (boy what could've been had Mr. Jackson not gotten hurt), and the 1989 Bill Ripken **** Face card (actually I bought a 1989 Fleer factory set that had that boring black box card; I had to get the **** Face card seperately; the 1989 Fleer set isn't really complete unless you have the uncensored Bill Ripken card. And maybe some of those late 1980s/early 1990s sets are only $5-$10 now, but you still get ALL the great Hall of Famers from that time, and who cares if the 1984 & 1985 Donruss sets are only worth about half of their peak values; they're the same cards as before and just as much classics as they were back then, right?

Unfortunately, not in my '86 Donruss pack

I didn't quite 'hit the jackpot' with the '86 Donruss pack, but it was fun to bust! I might have to pick up some more of this year. I love the design and has lots of good cards in the set. Although, the "big" rookies of Canseco, McGriff & Fielder have all lost their umph. But, still got some fan favorites like 'Nails', Daulton & O'Neill among others. As well as solid 2nd year cards of Clemens & Puckett.

My 1986 Topps pack was horrific

As you can tell by my 'best' cards on the scan....there wasn't much. The Stewart looks like it was laid flat on a driveway and dragged across the concrete a bit. Plus, the rest of the cards were very off center....some were nearly miscut! Wow, tough centering on these badboys.

I usually store my Psa slabbed cards in the vault or Super vault boxes, I dont have a complete PSA graded set that large yet(700+ cards). I do have some smaller Kelloggs sets and partial Psa sets in Vault boxes and a few Mj Roop boxes. I can usually fit about 75 or so cards in a vault box.

It's amazing to me how solid of a design '86 Donruss verses the very unappealing '86 Fleer. I'm undecided about how the '86 Topps looks.

Sorry I have been lax in my sharing of scans. Here are scans of the stars I received in my 1989 through 1986 packs.
So far I have been very lucky. The 89 UD Griffey Jr I previously posted and the 86 Fleer Canseco/Plunk shown below.
I am looking forward to 1985 trough 1980, but I am extremely hapy with my results thus far.

Guys.... I'm still way behind on the rip .... here are the best of my '87's.....

1987 Fleer .... I love the look of this set ... and really like the photography of these two. Mookie looks like a real bad a$$.

1987 Donruss .... Three HOF's in one pack ... nice!

1987 Topps ... horrible pack, but I got what looks like a 44 year old rookie and easily one of the best afro's of 1987, and perhaps the first I've ever seen on a guy with two first names. $$$$

Good stuff!

Here are my '86's .... not near as enjoyable for me as the '87's .... did score a killer Vince Coleman RC ... and the Rose record hit card is really cool.

Interestingly ... the back of the Rose card hails the event the "baseball event of the century" .....

In the 13 years that followed (1987-1999), I believe we saw TWO bigger events of the century, BOTH occuring in 1998 ---- The McGwire HR record and the Ripken iron-man record. Pretty crazy, really ....

My '85 Topps pack was definitely a trip back down memory lane, but wasn't very fruitful. Although, back in '85, a Mark Langston regular issue rookie would've been something! Even with this huge wax stain on the back.

Rick Leach
Ricky Horton

BTW, that 1987 Topps set that one guy busted is one of my favorites. Very nice design front and back.

This pack didn't open up like all of the others that I've opened recently. Not saying it was tampered with, but it sure seemed weird with what looked like a little glue. But, I hope I'm only overreacting and that the rest of you end up with perfectly centered Mattinglys, Ripkens & Ryans (among other 'star' cards )...I ended up with sweet Lou and a card that was sort of popular rookie in the So Cal area in the mid 80s of A.Hawkins.

.....rest of the pack goes like this....

Brewers Sticker
Bob Forsch
Jay Howell
Billy Sample
Al Holland
Craig McMurtry
Dick Ruthven
Jerry Hairston
Bake McBride
Scott Fletcher
Pat Zachry
Bob Stanley
Britt Burns
Bill Laskey

I've got some catching up to do. Sorry about the delay guys.

Nothing to write home about but I did pull some Sox so I'm happy. I still remember being 8 years old and spending all my vacation money on '85 Topps packs at Cape Cod. I was so happy just to pull Red Sox players ... things haven't changed much.

Gotta love the Francona photo. So much for keeping your eye on the ball, huh? Good thing he's a better manager than a player. Another weird thing about this card is that on the back the copyright says "1984 Donruss" despite the fact that it's an '85. Weird.

How does someone with the name Razor Shines not become a superstar? Baffling.

80'sjunkie, I think that I might want that Dravecky from you, if possible. Tom, I've got a couple here that look pretty spiffy as the pack produced about 5 PSA 9 possible cards! Best I've had in awhile! Not a lot of stars, but I was looking for PSA possible stuff and I found it. That Jerry Remy is normally a tough card to find centered. I had to show the Boggs although it was O/C

....the rest went like this....

Bobby Clark (solid 9, possible 10)
Onix Concepcion (seems like a pretty solid 9)
Bob Knepper (o/c)
Scott Ullger (looks like an 8)
Garry Maddox (o/c)
Ed Whitson (looks like a strong 8)
Larry Pashnick (o/c)
Jeff Jones (possible 8, but had corner ding)
Tom Niedenfuer (o/c)
Dane Iorg (o/c)
Dickie Thon (o/c)

.....all in all, it was a good pack for me. With this nice centering in my pack, I sure hope one of you ends up with that Mattingly and Joe Carter PSA 10 that is lurking in one of our packs! Good luck!

1984 Fleer:

I nominate this for the BEST PACK OF THE BUST!!!!!!!!

Seriously, in one pack I get:

1. My second card of John Henry Johnson, with the exact same 'fro he has on the '87 topps card.
2. Jay Johnstone with a Budweiser umbrella cap. Dude, that rules!
3. Larry McWilliams holding an older Fleer card of himself.

I LOVE IT!!!!!!!

... and that, my friends, is what makes these busts so much fun!

For the 1983 Topps Rip, please let me know if you pull a #604 Joe Morgan card (and can spare it).
This is the last card I need for my SF Giants Team set.

thank you,

Mike

I am way behind... so I'll just share the highlights.

And I use that term loosely.

A good pack of 88 Score, and a very good pack of 87 Fleer (which I saw someone else got as well.) Other than that, a few scattered HOFers, nothing exceptional.

Of interest: I got 7 Bob Boone cards. Guess I should start a registry set. Also got a lot of Graig Nettles and Steve Garvey.

Fun fact: Steve Garvey once hit on my ex-wife, in front of me, at the 1998 All-Star FanFest. Things being what they are, looks like I came out better paying attention to Orlando Cepeda and Red Schoendienst anyhow.

My 1984 Donruss pack was extremely well-centered and very sharp. Anyone need any raw 84 Donruss?

My 1985 Donruss pack, on the other hand, looks like it was hand-cut by Michael J. Fox.... in the dark. The Henke I posted is representative.

Read 'em and weep. I sure did.

Thanks '80s Junkie!

For my '83 Fleer pack....it was fun rippin' it, but not a lot to show for it. Although, I like the centering on the "penguin" card!

...the rest went like this...

Giants Sticker
Gary Gray
Tom Brennan
Mike Fischlin
Bob Mitchell
Bob Shirley
Duane Walker
Ray Burris
Willie Aikens
Wally Backman
Mike Proly
Lynn Jones

.....so, not a lot in this one...but hopefully I'll pull some perfectly centered Sandberg, Boggs or Gwynn rookies out of the Donruss and Topps!

BTW, I never pulled a centered Gwynn from Topps! Very unlucky.

Wow I'm glad I decided to open this 83 test pack.
I didn't pull any stars but I think at least 6 or so have psa 10 potential. The color on these are magnificent.
I wonder if topps quality control was better on these because they were test packs or if the plastic wrapper just kept them fresher all these years .
Either way I am still stunned by the color on these after 23 years.

Here are some of my 1982 cards:

For either fuzzy photos or bad printing, 1982 Fleer takes the cake!

The Fleer Brett looks like a PSA "8.4" and the Topps Sutter looks like a "9.6", in my estimation. I might send the Sutter in for grading during the next cheap special.

As usual, I'm a bit behind .... here are the highlights from my '83 packs:

Heavy on the George Brett .....

I've also gotta say, I really like the 83 Fleer. Clean, simple design and the cards in my pack were razor sharp. The Brett I pulled is in PSA 9 or 10 condition, easily.

That's right ladies and gentleman .... my THIRD John Henry Johnson card. I'd never heard of him before this bust, but three cards later (spanning the years '82, '84, and '87), I am well acquainted.

The great thing about '82 is our friend John Henry did NOT have his infamous fro.

So ...
'82, no fro
'84 fro
'87, idential fro as '84.

Interesting read in any sight! this is the post that lured me to the board. THIS is what collecting is all about- just a bunch of guys sitting around, BSing about old cards and saying WTF, let's rip some of these babies!! If 80sJ made a profit on these boxes, i wish i hadn't even known. seems like most did pretty well on these and had a blast. this witch hunt is reminding me of that movie Quiz Show.... Yeah, TV lied to us, but weren't we all entertained? and who's richer knowing the actual truth we never even wanted to know about to begin with? unfortunately, with mob rule, if yr the target of the aggression, it's best to just keep yr mouth shut and run before yr run out on the proverbial rail. no matter how clean he comes with everyone, he's still going to be looking over both shoulders every show he attends, if he attends. maybe this is deserving, maybe not, and i'm not defending......

Was there ever more than one of any star cards in any rips 80'2 headed up? I mean i pulled the Henderson rookie, so i was happy with this rip, but in this and others i dont recall ever seeing more than one of any star rookie. I think in the busting of all of these boxes, at least one time we should have had a really great box and pulled multiple star rookies. My theory is he ripped the key boxes in each group rip until he hit a star rookie and the the rest of the packs he left as he recived them from bbce. That is why we either never hit a big rookie in some boxes, or never more than one.

good point Zef....guess i just try to get everyone to not be so high and mighty. some things, like that 80s rip, and childhood memories, you just want to remember the way they were. like if i weren't told the truth later, i never would have wanted to know. stupid example: i ate, what i thought was a nice plate of brocolli and cheese. tasted wonderful, until my wife told me it was what she had just spat out because it was too hard to chew! i would have loved not knowing....

<< Was there ever more than one of any star cards in any rips 80'2 headed up? I mean i pulled the Henderson rookie, so i was happy with this rip, but in this and others i dont recall ever seeing more than one of any star rookie. I think in the busting of all of these boxes, at least one time we should have had a really great bow and pulled multiple star rookies. My theory is he rippied the key boxes in each rip until he hit a star rookie and the the rest of the packs he left as he recived them from bbce. That is why we either never hit a big rookie in some boxes, or never more than one. >>

DING! DING! DING!

And it took him 3 weeks to ship?

Right....

Gary got the Gwynns.

I saw a bunch of commons, semistars and off grade stars... maybe 4 legit hits total.

How many boxes did they rip again? 32?

Bob C.

EDIT: THEY RIPPED 36 BOXES!!!!!

GREAT PULLS!!!!!

<< Roar:

Good post, I didn't see anyone questioning the quality during the rip.

Mob mentality definately ruled on this unfortunate situation.

It's to bad everyone wanted to triple their money on a wax break, just not gonna happen.

Peace

Doug, with all due respect, you have no idea what you're talking about.

I participated in 4 of Gary's rips -- spent over $400.

Yes --- I got a Bud Black 84D in Gem Mint 10, a Nice Mattingly, and an Elway RC in the football rip ....

...but I also spent $400 for a specific product from BBCE. Gary has no verified that a lot of the product he shipped was from his own inventory, not BBCE. That's not what I paid for --- REGARDLESS of what is pulled. I'm a collector, not an investor ---- non of my rips have been for dollars.

For you to come on here after this fiasco and throw out lines like "It's to bad everyone wanted to triple their money on a wax break" is very offensive to us collectors who spent a lot of money to participate in these things to have fun and feel like kids again --- only to fnd out later that we'd be conned.

Why don't you get off your self-righteous soap box --- you're no better than anyone else.

Ok here is a post from someone who busted his 89 Fleer packs, I thought these two cards came out several months apart, We may need to ask the resident Ripken FF expert how these two cards could be in the same box ?

I opened two Fleer packs. They were almost identical collation. Generally this would be bad. However, in this case it was good because they both contained Billy Ripken cards. It seemed strange that one was the FF and the other was a black box. Here are the best of the two packs. In addition, I opened the two Donruss packs. The best card was Biggio. It was a lot of fun opening these packs.

By the way on the pulls of the Gwynn and Griffey rookies, These cards were pulled from foil packs 83 Michigan Test, 89 Upper Deck Foil(almost impossible to re-seal).

I am almost positive that this is impossible. I would be like a 1 in a million screw up from the factory if that occured.

I just went back a scanned through the thread pretty quick to look at the pulls, So if Someone wants to go back and check out it out please do.

I saw where Gary Pulled an 89,88,87, and 86 Mattingly.

I did not see where anyone pulled A ;Clemens rookie, A Mcgwire Rookie from 85 Topps or a Mattingly Rookie from any company.
Kinda strange that three of the biggest rookie cards from the decade are missing.
Please someone go back and double check my checking.

With fleer anything is possible. However i was right in the middle of that nonsense back in 89 and I did not get any that way. If I remm correctly the FF came first followed by the scribble, then the black box then the white out version. Also I remm reading here that they had maybe 2 more versions. But like I said with fleer anything is possible.

strange.
