I have had this coin since the 1960's when I found it in a California coin dealer's "junk box": It is not in as good shape as the OP's coin and appears to have been "nibbled".

Yes, it's a pomegranate. Under Spanish rule (and occasionally after independence as well), the region was known as New Grenada (Nueva Grenada). The badge of old Grenada, in southern Spain, is the pomegranate; it can usually be seen at the bottom of the Spanish coat of arms.
