Finally sent my 1887 Crown in for grading and true view

I actually thought it grade a MS65 easy........but alas....it scored a MS64

Nonetheless, a truly awesome "10" in the eye-appeal department.

From the reverse toning it looks to be from one of the '87 Mint Sets judging from the bright blue rectangle at 1:30

and congrats on the 64! Not a shabby grade at all. Dude it's from 1887 ...

We get hung up on high numbers so easily. We forget that many of the truly rarest, most valuable hammers of all time have been graded 64 or lower.

I don't do the numbers game, so can't comment there, but with the "electric blue" the reverse of that piece is absolutely stunning and overall a coin most collectors would be proud to have. Congrats!

Wonderful coin.

Not sure I agree with 64 but I have not seen it in hand. I can tell you that I have not had a Victorian or Edwardian Crown that I have submitted come back higher than 64. My 1893 and at least one of the 1902's have been pictured before

Yes, I concur with that. In fact I have a blue beauty of my own of that date with same grade. Interestingly, proofs (especially mattes, but even ordinary proofs) seem to receive variable grading that is as they say in science "not readily reproducible" - even by the original grader! I also find it incredible that at auction houses such as our buddies at Heritage that a "65" or "66" will bring multiples of a "64" even though a blind comparo of the two might show the lesser graded coin superior to an independent viewer with NO stake in the transaction.

Thank you everyone for your comments. I didn't mean to come across in my post that I was disappointed.
Just that this last submission was this coin along with a few US coins and I was unlucky with grades.
But overall the images speak for themselves and I still love the Crown whether its in a MS64 or 66 holder.

In this instance, the coin speaks volumes which is consistent. Plastic can and often does change

Fantastic! Grade is irrelevant to me on that one. If it was AU53 or 65, the coin would have identical appeal. It's all in that sexy toning!

bidask.........It looks so prooflike but maybe these coins don't get that designation, or its the toning that held it back from that?
Whatever the reasoning behind grading these I just love it and waited for years to find one and got very lucky to find it raw.

Are these really selling for that kind of price?

These are truly wonderful and beautiful coins!!

I think one take home message for this is that the buyer better check the coin and then the label & plastic! As I said before the "reproducibility" of grading results is VERY poor IMO, despite the tremendous consequences when these coins are auctioned.

I think of this 1887 crown, then the 1893 crowns, and especially the proof gold of these years. The 1902 coins are also examples of this - I have seen TPG grading from fair to atrocious even by the major firms, and mostly on the crown through the 5 sov gold.
