Huh, wow these are way cooler than I expected them to be. Look like ancients with a modern twist.

For my part, I don't care for them and think these look like Franklin mint medals (not even the coins)....

I agree they look more like medals. I think it's the satiny brushed nickel look, with the darkness, almost like what you see on pewter jewelry. Which isn't good for coins. But if you can step back from the rare and valuable coins momentarily, and just appreciate the cool factor ... I think they are cool.

They [Perth Mint] are definitely good at coming up with products which large numbers of people want to buy.

Whether they are coins, and whether the buyers are numismatists, is continually up for debate. I don't have any issue with mints selling products. It's their business.

I would really like to like these. I can appreciate them and I think it's nice to see something that doesn't look like everything else out there. But they do look a lot like the 1960s and 1970s art medals. The Dali pieces made by everyone, the endless Israeli pieces. It's just not my thing.
We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.

I've been trying to put my finger on it, and ... I think it's a combination of the Art Deco style with modern fonts and possibly some cartoon influence (not meant to be derogatory).

I still think the darkened areas (patina?) are more striking than the design though. If these were struck with a traditional business strike, like coins, they would look totally different and probably more acceptable as coins. The darkness gives it the medal look IMO.
