Sorry for the barely legible pictures, taken with my phone while I was doing an appraisal for a client. I have no idea on this one.

Obverse text:
TER VERDEDIGING DER VOLKSVRIJHEID

Reverse text:
NAT.WEDSTR.
B.W.1921
6e PR.M.C

That's Dutch. Based on it's similarity to German, I'm guessing it says something like "Defense of the People's Freedom".

There's a member or two from there who may be able to give a better lead. Try changing your thread title to mention Dutch to lure them here.

Thanks. I'll change the title as you suggest

I googled various parts of the legend and one of the results/translations was something like "defending the undefendable".

Spoon's translation is correct.

between 1914 - 1940 there was a voluntary militia in the Netherlands called the Burger Wacht
they held shooting contests with rifles and pistols .

this medal was for a sixth prize won in 1921 by a member of the Machine gun Company ( M.C.)

B.W. stands for Burger Wacht and NAT.WEDSTR.(IJD)= National contest

Because the Netherlands stayed neutral in World War 1 , the Burger Wacht never came in real action,

The Burger wacht militia ended with the occupation of the Netherlands, by the German Army in 1940.

The man dressed as a civilian , is holding a boats hook .

Very cool, my client and I both thank you

Is there much of a market for a piece like this? I know the intricate silver/swiss ones can be fairly valuable. My client doesn't have any relatives or other ties to the Netherlands, so they are interested in selling it.

Best chance is to send it to dutch auction house: MPO - Energieweg 7 - 3401 MD IJsselstein - Netherlands
the guy that handles the medals is Idsard Septer email: [email protected] , he will be glad to give an estimate for your medal.

I said it was a boats hook , but now I've seen a similar medal in UNC quality , its some kind of an antique type long rifle.
I have no clue about the value of your medal.
