Worse dings have gotten into holders, but I suspect that one would get a genuine or details holder.

I believe Brits would give it a VF rating regardless of ding.
PCGS? I really have had trouble guessing them lately but I still think it would go 20 for a somewhat net grading with the ding, and maybe 30 without it.

I don't know how the ding will affect things. Are there any collections of hairlines? The picture suggests it a bit. That will certainly mean BB.

    yes

Not a bad looking coin but on this side of the pond, That is a ding that will prevent a grade

There's a guy in Kentucky that the Lightsiders say can fix the ding.

In fact, he could plug LM's Holeys and no one would know!!! imageimage

Wow, that is a big grade. IMO, that is a technical grade (MINUS the ding)....

    I'm pretty surprised that:

    1) it graded problem-free

    and

    2) it graded AU!?! image

IN Hand it's AU without a doubt there tons of toned luster there

That looks true, but likely IMO should have been downgraded (net) for the rim. Maybe EF45...

Wow, I forgot about this thread, but right there shows that I posted.

I'm stunned about the grade, but good on you - the detail is certainly there and the date appears legitimate.

I'm surprised that it graded that well or didn't get BB'd with a nice details grade because of the rim. The difference in pictures though is stunning and reminds me of my own lack of photographic ability with some coins. (UNC British large cents, with lots of luster, forget it.)

I'm happy that it graded well though and congrats on a tough coin!

I would have graded it XF details -- I'm absolutely dumbfounded that PCGS put a coin with rim damage like that in a problem free holder.

This one is currently for sale on eBay in an XF details holder, and I would rate yours very similarly (though the surfaces on yours are definitely more original, the level of detail is similar and the amount of hairlines is similar).

I'm not being a negative nancy here, I'm just being honest. It's a lovely coin, but it's not problem free AU.

I have to disagree, Mine has more detail and has not been cleaned
The ding I give you but mines definitely the more detailed coin

You can't compare the two - like night and day.

The coin in hand is likely deserving and I can see it actually - it could have went either way - it seems it was rightfully graded what it deserved IMHO.

Plus the ding looks way over-magnified in photo - I will assume its quite discreet in hand...

I do agree that the lens can really magnify any problems on a coin way way out of proportion. I have seen spots or marks appear on coins in photos that are not discernible in hand or only if you are looking for the Mark.
