Before ESPN, who was your favorite local news sports announcer.

1970s1970s Posts: 3,093 ✭✭✭✭✭
All local news channels had a sports report that usually lasted anywhere from 3-5 minutes. Not sure if ABC, NBC, and CBS national news gave sports reports, except for maybe
the world series or super bowl, Olympics, etc. Who did you enjoy watching on your news channel ?

Growing up in LA in the 70's and 80's we had so many national level guys but Oblerman always stands out as he was a little different. I believe he was on channel 5 which was non-network. Other LA guys, like Jim Hill, were also solid.

    I remember Warner Wolf.

    He was a goofball.

Remember during highlights, the camera would find some crazy women fan in the crowd, then he'd say...."and Diane Sawyer was at the game!!".

"If I say something in the woods and my wife isn't there to hear it.....am I still wrong?"

I thought Warner Wolfe was more in syndication...like sports machine with George Michael..RIP..he was good.
Wow. Growing up and knowing olbermann and gowdy as rookies out of school. That's like taking English 101 with Stephen king before he made it big.
We had a local reporter who grew up and returned here after college. He was our favorite only because he was only one of two or three to choose from.

You may not agree with his politics, but few commentators possess the knowledge or the passion for collecting baseball cards that Keith does. He has also done some tremendous tributes recently for those who have passed away.

Olbermann is a douche I don't need his politics , I don't like idiots like him that get above themselves and start thinking they are important , read the sports and shut your trap about everything else.

For Broadcasters I always liked listening to Fred Cuisik and johnny pierson do Bruins games. Once derek Sanderson came on I instantly hated his schtick and I switched to watching with the volume muted and the radio tuned to Bob Wilson and John Bucyk.

Yep. Totally agree. He spouts off one sided, bias sports talk. His reporting is half a**ed and there's a reason why he never stays anywhere long.

After Jerry Coleman, the long-time SD announcer passed away, Olbermann did a terrific piece to honor him~worth a listen, even if you can't stand him personally.

<< <i>Remember back in the 70's how sports announcers went out of their way to be kind and polite, and never wanted to offend anyone ?

I remember how many people did not like Howard Cosell because they thought he was too "political" as a sports announcer. Howard would say nothing about politics, but
he always brought up things that seemed like he was trying to create controversy, unlike all the other announcers who just talked a good wholesome broadcast.

Turn the page to after 1990 and you get that bozo who interviewed Pete Rose and made a fool of himself, and he later apologized. Too many of those guys running around, who
would have never even been in sports broadcasting back in the 70's because they would have never made the cut. >>

On Monday nights , on ESPN Classic you can watch Battle of the Network Stars. Howard Cosell is the announcer and its cringeworthy at times listening to him.

How do you feel about Eckersley as a broadcaster ?

I find him entertaining because he puts his personal feelings into the broadcast with a little sense of humor. >>

I like Eckersley probably because I grew up watching him play and liked him as a player. I'm not old enough to remember much of Sanderson playing with the B's .

I would say after the incident with Jerry Remy's son murdering that woman and all the drama with that I don't want to see or hear Jerry anymore.

Sanderson was the worst sort of homer as an announcer it was nauseating .

Speaking of Bruins announcers , I don't like Brickley either but that may be because I've met him , he's a drunk. He would drink at the Pembroke Country club at the bar and he was always lousy to the staff there. Arrogant even when sober was my impression , considering he was nothing special as a player its hard to see where that came from.

Glad to see olbermann suspended by ESPN for the week. Just another reason to hate the guy. Not really sure how he's still on tv.
