The Roy Campanella Thread

Figured my primary collecting focus should at least have its own thread. Hopefully there are more Campanella collectors out there.

Fantastic start! This also my collecting focus at the moment, although my budget is limiting how fast I can add to it. Here are the three I've added so far:

Beautiful Campanellas guys. The 1953 Topps and color Bowmans are my favorites. I'm trying to find a couple good vintage photos as well to have them framed with some cards for my office. I'll post some of those too --- if I ever am able to land any.

    Thanks for sharing.

not sure why but I always thought the 1959 Topps card was kind of a classic that was somewhat overlooked.

Quick question regarding the '57 Topps Campy: I've noticed that my copy has a rounded upper right corner but every other one that I've seen has a square corner (although I haven't paid much attention until recently). Does anyone know how that might happen?

Nice '56 Bob! That is quickly becoming one of my favorites (behind the '53 Topps) in the basic set. Of course I think they all pale in comparison to the Wilson Franks card but I doubt I'll ever be able to afford that one. image

I'm looking for a nicely centered PSA 8 '49 Bowman Campy rookie if anyone's got one for sale.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

50th Anniversary of Roy Campanella night at the LA coliseum. Largest paid attendance for a major league baseball game.

It was one of the most touching and memorable nights in all of baseball on this night. 93,103 fans packed the LA Coliseum for an exhibition game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees. Sandy Koufax pitched for the Dodgers and lost to the Yankees, 6-2. It was Roy Campanella Night. The star catcher for the Dodgers, paralyzed in an automobile accident, was honored for his contributions to the team for many years. ‘Campie’ continued to serve in various capacities with the Dodger organization for many years.

Has anyone noticed on the 1956 Topps Campanella there is a dodger player sliding into Roy Campanella?
was this game the Dodgers vs. The Dodgers?

I believe they used a generic picture and just painted it with the player on the card. The game in question could have been the Cardinals versus Cubs and not involved Campy at all. But it is a cool picture!

That should be the Yankees and therefore would be Yogi Berra. The bald head and number 8 would confirm this image

Picked up this '53 Bowman. Decent centering and edges but the image is a bit out of focus. I missed that in the eBay scan. But it will work until I can find an upgrade.
