Official Football HOF Rookies Thread**********************************************

Just thought I would start this because it's hard to find all the threads related to this topic. I know there are several of us on the boards working on the NFL HOF rookie set including JasP, ssgunnip, shagrotn, cmoking, envoy, and others.

I am currently at 75% on the set and cards seem to be getting tougher and tougher, which is to be expected.

I am trying to compile a list of players with probable entry into the HOF. I looked at the NFL HOF site and looked to see who has been nomintated in the top 15, how many times, and will try to add the Rookie cards of those with good possiblities. These are the players yet to be enshrined. Here are the results.

Jerry Kramer 10 times
Charley Conerly 7 times
Johnny Robinson 6 times
Ray Guy 6 times
LC Greenwood 6 times
Bob Kuechenberg 5 times
Lester Hayes 3 times
Claude Humphrey 3 times
Clark Shaughnessy 3 times
Mac Speedie 3 times
Ken Stabler 3 times

THere are 8 players nomiated twice including Derrick Thomas, MIchael Irvin, Randy Gradishar, and Russ Grimm

There are 17 players nominated once

And then there are all the players that are not yet eligible. I would like to get a list going.

Who, of these guys, do you believe will eventually get in? I know Jason will chime in because he is out Football Specialist..

  • I think Jerry Kramer and Ray Guy deserve to be in the hall.

Monk's chances drop every year I think with the numbers being put by todays wr's, unfairly or not.

Gary Zimmerman probably deserves it as well.

I don't think the others will get in .

    Oh boy, an official thread!

I'm only really working on running backs at the moment, so I'll give my opinion on retired RBs that may make it some day.

Emmitt Smith - #1 all-time rushing yards, #1 all-time rushing TDs, #2 all-time yards from scrimmage, #2 all-time TDs, 11 consecutive 1000-yard seasons, 8 pro bowls, 4 rushing titles, 3 rings, 1 dancing with stars crown. As lock as a lock can be.
Curtis Martin - #4 all-time rushing yards, 10 consecutive 1000-yard seasons, 5 pro bowls, 1 rushing title and 2 second places. One of the most consistent backs ever, and always in the discussion of best backs in the league from his rookie season to last year. Lock.
Jerome Bettis - #5 all-time rushing yards, 6 pro bowls, 1 ring. Usually linebackers punish running backs, not the other way around. Bettis defined his team for a decade, and to play for so long losing so few games to injury as such a big target is astonding. The ring clinched it for him. Lock.
Marshall Faulk - #9 all-time rushing yards, #4 all-time yards from scrimmage, #4 all-time touchdowns, 7 pro bowls, 1 ring. One of the most versatile backs ever. He might have been the best football player from 1998-2001. Lock.
Thurman Thomas - #11 all-time rushing yards, #8 all-time yards from scrimmage, 4 consecutive yards from scrimmage titles, 5 pro bowls, 4 conference championships. I think he eventually gets in. Losing 4 Super Bowls hurts, as does his deficiency in TDs and the perception that he was never the leader of his team.
Terrell Davis - #42 all-time rushing yards, 1 rushing title and 2 second places, 3 pro bowls, 2 rings. Despite dominating for 3 years and his credentials comparing favorably to some other HOF RBs, I don't think he gets the nod. His reputation helps and his rings certainly help, but 3 years does not a HOF career make.
Eddie George, Ottis Anderson, Ricky Watters - All guys with 10,000 career yards but whose other credentials fall a bit short.

    Joe
No such details will spoil my plans...
  • Here is the list of semifinalist for this years NFL HOF

This list will bew trimmed to 15 sometime in Jan. 2007
then add these 2 from the oldtimers

    G. Hickerson (6)
    C. Sanders (7)

Between 3 and 6 Hall of Famers will be named each year

    Pro Bowls in ()

    T. Davis (3)
    D. Dawson (7)
    F. Dean (4)
    R. Dent (4)
    R. Gradishar (7)
    K. Greene (5)
    R. Grimm (4)
    R. Guy (7)
    C. Haley (5)
    L. Hayes (5)
    M. Irvin (5)
    B. Kuechenberg (6)
    B. Matthews (14)
    R. Mcdaniel (12)
    A. Modell
    A. Monk (3)
    A. Reed (7)
    K. Stabler (4)
    P. Tagliabue
    D. Thomas (9)
    T. Thomas (5)
    A. Tippett (5)
    R. Wehrli (7)
    G. Young
    G. Zimmerman (7)

Here is who I think will make it:

Ray Guy Best punter of all time
    Bruce Matthews A lock
Randall McDaniel Too many Pro Bowls to ignore
Andre Reed 5th all time rec. , 6th all time rec. yardage , 4 Super Bowls
Thurman Thomas Only player to lead the NFL in yards from scrimmage 4 straight years, 1991 NFL MVP, 4 Super Bowls

I think this is kind of a weak year for the HOF this could be D. Thomas or Monk's year to get in !
I dont think either of the old-timers will make it for he 1st time in a long time.

Who do you guys think will make it???

    Best Regards,

    Jeff

My stone cold LOCKS for the Class of 2007--Bruce Matthews, Thurman Thomas, Gene Hickerson...

Thurman Thomas is the best Offensive skill position (QB/RB/WR/TE) player on the board this year..And I don't see them having a class without at least ONE skill player. In fact, that has only happened once since 1983...Too many deserving guys (Thomas, Irvin, Monk, Reed) to not have at least one of them inducted. And i think Thomas is first in line from that group.

I would also expect at least one NON-player to go in this year. Either Tagliabue or George Young.

Only have 6 spots available, and the voters have only MAXED OUT the inductees 3 times since 1990. Since they just did it last year, my guess is that 5 guys will go in this year (considered a weak year BTW).

I've named 4 above, and the 5th guy will most likely be someone most of us consider a long shot. They could go with one of the WRs (my vote would be for Irvin, he was the most dominant of the 3). Otherwise, I predict it will be someone like Bob Kuechenberg or Ray Guy.

Don't forget about Derrick Thomas either. He's the top defensive player on the list IMO, and has been VERY close the last couple of years.

There is NO WAY that will happen.

Here's why, the voters put ALOT of stock into the Senior committee. The Senior committee is actually made up of 9 of the most trusted members of the voters who select the HOFers. These 2 guys are automatic finalists. All they require is 80% confirmed on a yes or no ballot. The guys who will be arguing for their induction in the voting room are the very guys who SELECTED them.

There are so many deserving Senior candidates out there, it would be a crushing blow to have TWO Senior candidates denied. They would probably have to re-vamp the whole process of Senior's if that happened. I'd say 50/50 that both of them go in, but 100% that at least one of them WILL go in.

    Just my opinion of course,

Read above in reference to why I think at least one of the Senior candidates will go in, and I think Hickerson is by far the strongest of the 2. He was the pulling Guard for Jim Brown, Bobby Mitchell and Leroy Kelly(all HOFers), which doesn't hurt his chances..lol..

6 time Pro Bowler, 5-time first team All-Pro, played in 2 Championship games with the Browns.

Here's a bunch of my "future" HOF RCs...

    Future NFL HOF RCs

In addition to Dave's list, here are some other "current" players that all have 6+ Pro Bowls already???

Will Shields- 11 Pro Bowls---Lock HOFer
Rueben Brown- 8 Pro Bowls--No Chance
Orlando Pace- 7 Pro Bowls---Getting close
Michael Strahan-7 Pro Bowls--Needs one more dominant season to be a lock
Mike Alstott- 6 Pro Bowls--long shot
    LaRoi Glover- 6 Pro Bowls--Never
Walter Jones- 6 Pro Bowls--On his way, needs more top notch seasons
Kevin Mawae- 6 Pro Bowls--Very Long shot

My take on these current players:

Warren Sapp--close..I think he needs one more dominant season, and Im not sure he'll ever have another
John Lynch--same as Sapp, Safety is a tough position to make HOF, just ask Steve At-water
    Zach Thomas--On his way
    Junior Seau--1st ballot
    Jason Elam--Gonna be tough for a kicker..Neds about 1,000 more points..lol
AdamVinitiari--Same as above, although his "clutch" kicks will help
    Ray Lewis--Lock
    Peyton Manning--Lock
Mark Brunell--No chance..He needed at least one more Pro Bowl season or a Super Bowl Ring to even get in the argument
    Drew Bledsoe--Same as above
    Jonathan Ogden--Lock
Terrell Owens--On his way, but not if he retired today
Randy Moss--Was on his way..If he stays in Oaklnad, his career might be over
    Brett Favre--1st ballot
Corey Dillon--Long shot..If he can break 12,000 yards he might get considered
    Tony Gonzalez--Lock
    Derrick Brooks--Lock
Champ Bailey--On his way...6 pro bowls in 7 years..Probably another one this year too
Ty Law--Very long shot..Not enough dominant seasons..
    Marvin Harrison--1st ballot
    Larry Allen--1st ballot
Rod Smith--If he retires after this year, no chance..If he can keep padding the stats, then maybe..He needed another Pro Bowl type season

How about Jason Taylor? I think he's another 2 years away from being a serious contender. By the way, I just passed the 50% mark today with a GPA of 7.96 w/ the additions of Jackie Smith and John Riggins in PSA 8. I paid around $185 for the Smith and $85 for the Riggins which is centered very nicely. I've been chasing Riggins for a while and nicely centered copies are tought to win.

It's tough for a pure kicker to get in. Jan Stenerud is the only pure kicker inducted... the rest are old school kicker / somethings. I think Anderson and Andersen are locks, top 2 scorers in NFL history and they were SO good for SO long. Andersen is still going! I think Vinatieri is a lock too, because he's regarded as the best clutch kicker of all time. I doubt Elam gets a sniff. By the time the 3 locks are inducted, the committee is going to be reluctant to induct another kicker?!?!

poor roger wehrli. 7 time pro-bowler. he played on a team that no longer exists in the city he played and was terrible for much of their existence in st. louis.
the word is that the hof put three players in from his era (larry wilson, jackie smith and dierdorf) and his chances are DOA.

it's too bad that you have to win super bowls to get in. if he had a star on his helmet he would be in already.

it's a sham that swann and stallworth are in and monk is on the outside even with his super bowl rings. if kurt warner had won the 2002 super bowl he would be in someday.

mm nailed it, the top right has a little fuzz. The unusual part is, the fuzz is extra cardboard, like the cut was incomplete. I'm sure a skilled doctor could take care of that, but they'll never touch my card. Even with the microscopic fuzz, I could easily see it in a 10 holder.

i think time will tell a little more with urlacher. he is good but not feared ala butkus. it will be interesting to see how he does now that his shields are disappearing in front of him. meaning harris with the injury and johnson with the guns. it was always the feeling up north of you (ie WI) that though he has the great speed he can have problems shedding blockers. the packers always felt if their linemen could get to his level they could move and handle him. which they were able to do when they had the talent on the o-line.

i think he has a good shot, even better if god forbid the bears win a super bowl while he is playing. he is considered to be the top MLB in his "era" already so that will help him as well. i have him on my list a potential HOFer's. Picks for Def. always seem tough. Its not just super bowls. Otherwise Charles Haley would be in.

    Jason,

Do you think that $190 is a fair price for a nicely centered PSA 8 Jackie Smith rc? BTW, nice job on the Starr rc. What did you pay?

Yeah, I saw the Jackie Smith on ebay that you won for $188. I thought was a steal at that price. I haven't seen one sell under $200 in some time. Typically these sell in the $200-$275 range...X-mas is a good time to buy...

I got the Starr in a package deal, but essentially paid $1,550 for it. Now I just need the PSA 8 1957 Paul Hornung to go with it...lol

    Jeff,

I don't have it - how much are you asking?
