What is a good metal detector for gold? In the $500 to $1,000 range

Want to give as a gift to father, not sure what is a good brand, model. Any tips?

Thanks,

I would recommend the White's Spectra V3i...... great MD and can be optimized for any and all metals... Super techology and the best customer service. Cheers, RickO

Whites MXT or MXT Pro would be less expensive and have a "Prospecting" mode that can be used for gold. They are an all around great detector and there is a great variety of coil choices. As stated, great customer service. An MXT may be quite easier to grasp for a beginner.
