But why are the fields so smooth looking with a whole different toning around the stars (I've seen different toning around the stars many times, but never this prevalent in something unaltered) - can you fill me in? I am not sure what this is.
Amazing coin indeed that looks familiar, my curiosity makes me wonder what exactly is on the fields that oxidized where the protected portions hidden in the devices didn't. Don't think it is native to the alloy but who knows. Not a knock, just curious.

The look that you are observing where the fields are dark and the protected areas light is a natural toning pattern of original gold with layers of patina in the fields and luster visible in protected areas. It is very uncommon in the market as most natural piece have been destroyed and those that survive are locked away.

Lovely early gold coin. Have always liked them since I picked up the Bass-Dannreuther book, but finding a quality circulated example without breaking the bank is a true challenge indeed.
