GTG of this early Eagle

shishshish Posts: 1,105 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've always admired these early ten's and now have an opportunity to buy one. Like most collectors this would be a major purchase for me. I realize this variety is not particularly rare (R4 I believe) but I think the die break adds character. It's graded by our host, thanks for your feedback.

Tough to tell, MS61 is my guess image

Looks like it could be a lovely coin! I see a little wear, but good luster so I'll say AU50.

That 53 grade because of the staple scratches on the reverse? I'd say they'd grade it EF 45.......

dinked on the "D" of united...the motto banner and shield

that aside...trust your gut on accepting those

i'd still be beyond stoked to own such an example...i could see mid au with a netted grade
still should be graded in my opinionimage

    very pretty example

I would rather see this one in hand first- before offering an opinion

    ^ This.

Early gold must be reviewed in hand with a sharp eye. Grades between choice AU and select mint state are difficult, at best, to discern by photos alone, and many times the former appears as the better coin than the latter.

Amazing coin Greg, want to say 61 but am guessing it's in a OGH so I'll go 58

Thanks for all the great feedback, it's likely I'll purchase it despite a few small flaws. This coin was in an OGH for many years but it was reholdered in 2008. image

Wow. It needs to be rotated under a light to really get an idea of those surfaces but I'm seeing MS, maybe 63?

It's an AU coin but the type that could get into a 61 holder.

Great coin, I've always liked the 1797 date a lot. I'll guess AU55 because that's what I'd grade it from those pictures but agree with others that it needs to be seen in hand or at least in a couple more pictures in different light/angles. A coin like this one is near the top of my want list image

BHB makes a good observation, too much light, swag at AU55.
It is variety BD-2, reverse stars 3, 9, 10, 11 in a virtual straight line the easiest diagnostic.

Sorry for the poor images and thanks for your comments. This example has nice luster and I believe the reverse grades choice AU. Some of the obverse weakness may be due to the die failing. The consensus seems to be it's conservatively graded at EF-45.

Using Photobucket for an image host deprives TONS of people from seeing your images.

    I use
    http://postimages.org/

and am EXTREMELY happy with their ease of use and the fact that anyone can see whatever you host there.
