Post something you bought from poor images that made your jaw drop upon arrival

1869 Independent Order of Odd Fellows - Philadelphia Fiftieth Anniversary Grand National Celebration, 51mm Diameter, Silvered White Metal

I first saw an example of this medal about a decade ago and really liked the nouveau obverse design however it was holed for suspension which turned me off. Over the years I’ve seen a half a dozen others which all had either environmental damage or abused in some fashion. None have compared to the quality of this specimen which looked wonderfully preserved based on the seller mediocre images. Well I had a major eyegasm once it arrived and I had it in hand being fully proof-like with wonderful pull-away patina.

Enjoy! image

Purchased on eBay maybe ten years ago. The seller said the coin had color, but the photos were
so dark, it was impossible to make it out. I decided to take a flyer and was ecstatic once it arrived.
    Prooflike.

This is the only coin that comes to mind. It's not expensive, but I was surprised when I opened the package and seen it.

I've posted this coin in a similar thread but it still baffles me. It is from the Boscoreale hoard, a group of Roman gold coins excavated in 1895 in Pompeii, found beneath the ash of Mt. Vesuvius when it erupted in 79AD, resulting in toning on some of the coins (but few are dramatic):

The seller's images (highest resolution available)

    image

    My images:

    image

To say I was happy would be a major understatement image

It was also sold unpedigreed but through some sleuthing and a lot of luck, I've pieced together a pedigree reaching back to ancient Rome:

Calico reference guide plate coin (number 604)
Ex. CNG Auction 78, lot 1744 (May 2008)
Ex. HD Rauch Auction 75, lot 360 (May 2005)
Ex. Lanz Auction 70, lot 166 (Nov 1994), the collection of Margaretha Ley, one of the most famous and successful personalities in the world of fashion
Ex. Leo Biaggi de Blasys (coin 306)
Ex. Bank Leu Auction 30, lot 326 (Apr 1982)
Ex. Auktion Glendining (Jan 14, 1953), lot 22
Ex. J.C.S Rashleigh collection (formed ca. 1920)
    Ex. Boscoreale Hoard of 1895

Dark pictures on ebay, seller apologized for the toning and sold me this coin and several similar commems in old NGC holders for gray sheet bid.

BS, That medal has it all. Love the originality, colors, pull away, nipplage, and nouveau design. If the 1917 SLQ caused a stir for the bare breast, this one must have really raised some eyebrows in 1869. I would
guess that not that many people owned them at the time. Congratulations on a super acquisition. BS

These are photos of a 1914-D NGC MS64 BN I bought from an auction a few years ago for my personal collection - it's the 1914-D that's in my signature line.

    The catalog photo was horrible:

But when I saw the coin in auction lot viewing, it was stunning. This is what the coin actually looks like:

Not to squelch on what is a beautiful '14-D, but in between NGC and PCGS plastic, it's grown a spot on the right wheat ear... you may wish to have it checked out for any possible deterioration before something worsens.

I picked up each of these from bad photos and each is now a highlight in my collection

This one looked completely BN in the listing
    image

Terrible teletrade photo need I say more
    image

This ebay listing showed just a tinge of blue highlights
    image

You really have to see this one in hand. Photo showed no color and the listing did not even mention it. Bob had a tough time getting a good pic of this one. I plan on getting a TV.
    image

Poor scan I could see color but no detail
    image

This was a horrible ebay pic. I thought I saw album toning. No returns either. Picked it up for around $35 I think
    image

You can find the heritage image of this one. Former anacs holder
    image

Another ebay pic. Really could not see anything special but it had on questions returns and a good price.

The seller used a scanner for his selling images. He said it had nice color. I can not put into words how happy I was when I opened the package and saw this Buff.

Purchased a 1936-P Buffalo Nickel (PCGS MS66) on eBay seven years ago that had three terrible images with the auction. The images were so dark it was almost laughable. However, in one of the images I could barely make out what appeared to be some detail above the Indian's braid indicating a potential full strike.

For those who don't know, this is a date/mm that often has good strikes, but very rarely has a true full strike. In Ron Pope's magnificent study on strike quality for this series, he estimates that only 0.3% have a full strike. I agree with Ron's estimate as I've only seen three that would qualify as full strikes in over 13 years of collecting this series.

Anyway, the price for a 36-P wasn't significant so I took the risk even though I didn't need the date. I won the coin at the opening bid of $100 and received an absolute MONSTER piece. Although it's one of the least expensive coins in my collection, it's probably the one I'm most proud of as it's virtually irreplaceable with such a strike.

Sorry, I don't have a camera to take images. Sux, I know. image

1950-D's are one of the top 3 most difficult coins to find toned in the Franklin series. I bought this one off of eBay from images that showed a little bit of brownish golden toning on the obverse and a little splash of russet on the reverse. I bought it for 1/5th of what a toner for this date/mm in this condition should go for.

I bought this NGC PF 67* RB IHC based upon this image:

    image

The coin really looks more like a sterling gem than a comic book Indian:

    image

The last image is mine and was difficult to get right in the slab. I had hoped PCGS would cross it at PF 67 and I could get a TrueView, but no luck this time around.

One score. a 1909 S Lincoln cent, advertised as AU, barely discernible pictures.

But, they had a good return policy.

so I took a shot, and got it below AU bid.
