Genuine - UNC Details (94 - Altered Surf.)

So my question is, why didn't it get an actual grade instead of just a Genuine?? And how would I know if the color was the altered surfaces or if the surface was altered??

I'm no expert....

But if the toning was the issue, wouldn't it come back as "Questionable Toning" instead of "Altered Surfaces"?

I'm just wondering here, but maybe it was whizzed? I see some marks on the cheek, neck and left obv field that look sort of like arcs or little circles. They might also be fingerprints, hard to tell. If whizzed that could explain the A.S. code. Just guessing based on what I can see.

Questionable color has a different code "91" and the slab would say "Questionable Color". I think Altered Surface means whizzed or tooled? Maybe PCGS was thinking the color was OK but the surface underneath the color was tooled? I still like it and think it's pretty I always thought their broad range"details" grade was weird though ... why say UNC details ... why not MS64 details.

I think you see a break in the toning. The toning does not look good for a Peace dollar IMO. But, it never hurts to try if you are not certain. Sorry for the way it worked out for you.

I looked at this coin with a loupe. I didn't see any obvious signs of whizzing. No hairlines or circular loops. That's the first thing I look for in a coin.

It might mean they detect or suspect that substances were applied to the coin. The color could be
a byproduct of that. As I said in the original thread, that toning does not look natural to my eye.

Do not look for signs in the tea leaves when it comes to PCGS genuine codes. They seem arbitrarily applied at time and the opinion of the grader changes the number. Instead of questionable color they might say that the method of AT damaged the surface. It's all so random.

As always, it's tough to tell without seeing the coin in-hand.

However, just looking at the coin, my guess is that there's something wrong with the surface of the coin (smoothing, tooling, whizzing, cleaning, even mild environmental damage) and someone added the artificial toning to cover up the surface anomaly.

Sometimes color is faked to try to add value, other times it is added to be deceptive and hide something.

Oh well, a lesson learned. I think there is still going to be small market for it to recoup my losses.

I think it's first or worst. The first thing they spot that keeps the coin from grading is the notation on the slab. If it has other problems the graders don't note them, they just move on.

I could be wrong, but I checked this coin, which I thought was pretty thorough, for anything else that would BB this coin. I didn't see anything out of the ordinary.

Couple of things...

I like the look of the coin, but it still a crapshoot for grading.
That said, they usually take just the first thing that would GEN a coin.

So, if you REALLY want to see if you can get it in a PCGS holder, then do the acetone bit on it.
Would hurt it.

May still GEN if they feel there is another reason for it. Just so you are aware of that.

An acetone bath with alcohol rinse would remove residues....but it will still be AT. Cheers, RickO

These kinds of coins often get strong dollars on Ebay. You may still make out ok.
