The September Las Vegas show at the Palace Station is now the “Arizona Coin Expo” owned and run by Sandy and John Gulde, and this is the first show. (The March show at the Palace Station is put on by the Las Vegas Numismatic Society and used to be run by Sandy and John but is now run by DEI Expos – Frank and Dawn who also own and run the Ontario Coin Show). The Palace Station is a nice venue, free entrance to the show and very easy to get to – it’s right off the 15 freeway and Sahara, and parking is abundant and free!
This is a picture I took off the Palace Station website.
I arrived for set up on Thursday which was from 2-7pm. I don’t really like the loading area since it’s rough and bumpy and has a somewhat steep ramp, but once in the room, there’s plenty of room behind and in front of the tables so set up is easy. After my table was ready to go, I wondered around the room a little, bought a 1972/72 that I needed for inventory and found a very pretty original raw 1900 Indian cent.
Then it was time to open one of the bottles of wine I brought!
After set up, I went to the Rio the check in, and decided to stay there and play for the night. Here’s the view from my room during the day, then at night.
After I checked in and was headed to dinner, I passed these two slot machines right next to each other. Unfortunately, I wasn’t the one who hit these jackpots!
I had dinner with a couple other dealers at a very good Chinese restaurant right around the corner from the poker room. Unfortunately, they didn’t serve alcohol, so I didn’t have my usual wine with dinner. However, one of the dealers went to the gift shop and bought a few bottles of beer which went well with the Chinese food! Then it was time to play! The Rio only had no-limit poker games going in the poker room, so I decided to play Ultimate Texas Hold-Um and Three-Card poker out by the black jack tables. After being ahead, then down, the up, by the time I went to bed, I was ahead $20!
On Friday, the show opened to the public at 10am. People slowly trickled in and soon the bourse floor was buzzing with activity.
This customer had a pile of cash – he’s the kind of customer all us dealers love!
I stopped by Rick Snow’s table to see what cool coins he had – he always has some of the most beautiful, rare , and interesting pennies. This time, he had some very rare and unusual patterns. He told me that the 1885 below was struck in silver and only 5-7 are known to exist. The 1850 is the first small cent pattern struck in 1/8th silver with the same style as the 1885. Apparently, they put holes in the coins so they could make them larger, otherwise, without the hole, the coin would be too small and awkard to handle.
The design of the 1854 below was reduced from the silver dollar design so the detail is pretty crude. There are under 10 known. The 1850 is made from copper nickel and is the same design as the holed patterns above but without the hole.
After things died down, I opened a very special bottle of wine I had brought – an amazing 2006 Estate Crown Stags Leap Cab! Coin show in Las Vegas, good music, and very tasty wine - it doesn’t get much better than this (well, ok, it does, but Stags Leap is one of the best wines I can afford!)
After the show, we headed over to the Venetian since we had tickets to see the Blue Man Group. The Venetian is one of the most beautiful casinos in Las Vegas!
I played some black jack, Three-Card poker, and Ultimate Texas Hold-Um for a little while before dinner – didn’t do so well! Then we went to this wonderful Italian restaurant at the Venetian – Zeffirino’s. They had great ambiance, with a violinist and guitar player “serenading” everyone, wonderful wine, and the most tasty food! (Sorry, my camera was giving me problems so I couldn’t use my flash and some of the photos came out grainy – time for the iPhone 5!)
Then it was time for the Blue Man Group show! They put on quite an entertaining, interesting and quirky show! They of course never speak, but do a bunch of funny acts involving paint and great music with booming drums. They also took a couple people from the audience and included them in their acts – which was even funnier!
These are just photos of some of the casinos I passed along the way back to the Rio
Saturday was much more busy with quite a good crowd for most of the day.
I didn’t have any forum members stop by my table so I took some photos of dealers around the show
David of Excelsior Coin, Sacramento, CA
John of Sierra Coin, Grass Valley, CA
Rick Snow of Eagle Eye Rare Coin, Tucson, AZ
Jack and Saundra Beymer, Santa Rosa, CA
Me!
Saturday afternoon’s wine selection!
Well, the show is slowing down for the day. I think I’m going back to the Venetian to play some limit poker, so we’ll see how I do! The show is open Sunday, then I have my long drive home!

Did you ever notice that the strolling violinist go away after you give them money and stay when you don't give them money ?
