Who is to say it wasn't already cleaned when it got to NASA? Regardless, I don't think it's a big deal.

They needed to get all the earth cooties off of it before they took it into space.

The coin itself-not the cleaning-was discussed at yesterday's news conference on the Curiosity rover. From what I gather, it came from one of the scientists involved in the mission. Didn't say if he was a coin collector or not.
  • Better than it to be a MS70 example and having a meteor impact obliterate it, thus removing it from Earth's collectors' hands permanently, teehee!

This thing is not coming back anyway, so better to be a cleaned example that is lost forever.

This Coinworld article says there were four calibration targets used, but only one went to Mars, and it had to be sterilized, maybe that resulted in the scrubbing of it? Though I would think a simple UV or alcohol rinse would do it too.

Who cares? THAT coin, plus a certified provenance, has got to be worth low to mid five figures, which is a heckuva lot more than any graded MS 1909 VDB!

Why send a really nice coin up there? The Martians probably don't know anything about "Code 92" on PCGS holders. image
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
