By all means, check those Peglegs for Talon Heads.

The Talon head appears like a small thorn sticking out of the temporal regin on IKE's forehead and is the result of the die clashing which is how the pegleg gets created. The fields can be abraded and lapped but very little can be actually done to repair the portrait since any die work in that area would create a "bump" on the portrait.

    Talon Heads look like this:

    image

There could be one, or two close together, or two far apart and in some rare cases three. These can also be large or small and can be readily visible or not so easy to see.

The folks at the IKE Group can get you a DIVA attribution for them at the IKE Group Web Page.

And BTW, 1978-D's are not all that common compared to some of the other coins in the series.
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    Was this an ANACS Submission?

    Yes it was.

And by all means, check those Peglegs for Talon Heads.

Will be sure to check them when they get back.

The one that did not get graded as "Peg Leg" has a hint of the bottom serif in addition to an unfortunate skid across the bottom of the R which caused it to not be considered.

It does share the die characteristics that the others have (noticeable "Hair Lip" that had been partially removed). Guess this one wound up with a false serif due to the contact mark.

The 1973 S proof coins also have just a hint of the serif which I guess keeps them from making the "Peg Leg" variety. However, after seeing the large serifs on "normal" 1973 S proofs, I believe that these should be considered "Peg Leg". I may submit them to DIVA and see.

    Edited to add die characteristics.

The 1973-S Silver Proof Ikes just got through DIVA attribution and it appears at least one is a "Peg Leg". It would qualify for a discovery piece at that. I will be resubmitting it to ANACS for re-attribution. image
