New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Anybody has a fair estimate of what a run of 1997-2006 one ounce platinum eagles will cost?

I'm guessing that a large percentage of these, especially the smaller ones, are used as gifts. This will effectively remove many of them from the numismatic market for a long time.

Only picked up the first 3 for my 3 daughters to have 1 each. But I have to admit---I really like them.

I agree, in fact I think the 98 is the best design ever used on a US coin.

The 98 is my fav as well-- it looks like they've captured the whole feeling of a dark night on a coin!

I collect the elements on the periodic table, and some coins. I have a complete Roosevelt set, and am putting together a set of coins from 1880.

After looking at those mintage figures, they don't take into account the number in the 4 coin sets I believe.....

They did.. the 2004 $50 half oz coin, for example, sold less than 1,000 singles..

The numbers listed are total mintages and include the 4 coin set.

This series is getting a lot of press with the sky rocketing cost of the 2004. You may be looking at your last chance to pick up the back dates at affordable pricing. I have the complete run of the 1/4 ouncers. So I guess you could say I collect them.

By the way, I picked up every one except the 2005 for $300 or less on ebay in the last year. Watch the prices as the opportunity to get them at close to melt is quickly disappearing.

Yes, I too think that the 1998 has the most beautiful design I have ever seen on an American coin. Moonlit Maine coast at night. Stunning!!

I think the real question is what will the 2005s do??

With the second lowest mintages of the series and numbers roughly within 400-600 coins of the 2004 production this may be the place to look!!

I have to think these mintages will continue to decline as long as platinum is over $1000 an ounce. Fewer people will be able to afford to put one aside.

I received an inquiry from a fellow eBayesian regarding the mintage figures of the platinum proof mintages, particularly for the 1 oz ($100) pieces. Indeed, the Mint’s published figures do not agree with what Numismatic News published. Here are the differences for the $100 coins, and similar discrepancies exist for the other denominations:

    1997 – NN = 16,000; Mint = 15,886
    1998 - NN = 14,203; Mint = 14,912
    1999 - NN = 12,351; Mint = 12,363
    2000 - NN = 12,453; Mint = 12,453
    2001 - NN = 8,962; Mint = 8,969
    2002 - NN = 9,946; Mint = 9,834
    2003 - NN = 8,136; Mint = 8,246
    2004 - NN = 5,833; Mint = 6,007
    2005 - NN = 6,700; Mint = 4,900

As you can see, the discrepancies are fairly large, and a bit disturbing given the widespread rumor that the 2004 is the “queen” of the series thusfar. Does anyone have any further information to add?

BTW, does anyone know what coins comprised the 1997 “three coin set”?

the 2005 mint figures are wrong. They only go till the end of 2005. None of the coins, yes they are official coins, that were were sold during the the first 14 weeks of 2006 are accounted for in the mints 2005 figures. You will get a more accurate accounting of 2005 next year.

A coin is only worth so much if there are collectors. And collectors are not very fond of Platinum AE coins.
I've never bought a Platinum coin even though I've buying and selling numerous Gold/Silver coins since 1992.
