Ever get tired of getting outbid?

three close auctions this week lost, all last second snipes
do those snipes ever hurt. The last one i was winning with
10 seconds to go. thought i had a seated half with arrows
in fine for 34 bucks.

do you find yourself saying enough
and paying above what constitutes a "deal"? Is there an element of well, i'll fix THIS !!!
bout to start cruising BIN's

Bid stronger, or don't bid at all. At least for me, coins that I "limp" into are rarely keepers...Mike

It's part of the game. I don't mind getting outbid. I put in what I am willing to pay. If someone wants it more--so be it. When it is something I really want I bid too much. That pretty much ensures a win.

What sucks just as bad is if you track a coin for days and the coin is still bid low close to end of auction.
You are there for the snipe. and place your snipe bid with 15-20 sec to go (dialup lead time)....
the Ebay site is processing your bid ....
then up comes the dreaded "Sorry, the auction has ended!" message ....
and there were no other snipers around! grrrrrrrr!

I know ... "Use eSnipe" but I think it's fun sniping the old fashioned way, except with dialup which I am on now.
  • Don't be so chintzy and you won't lose the auction.
Bid $10,000 for that $35 coin, and you'll get it.

There's a coin on the bay right now that I'm going to snipe with a VERY strong bid. It will be mine. And I'm not telling any of you hooligans which one it is. image

What get's tiresome is I'm the kiss of death. It seems that when I don't bid on coins I like they sell for cheap money.

The second I bid on a coin, even if I'm an underbidder, the coin sells for moon money.

A buddy of mine asked me to bid on his auction once (I said no) because the second I bid, it's all over.

Is it that people watch what I bid on and then figure if Mike's bidding it must be good, or is it that I have good taste/good eye, and others that also do wind up bidding on the same coins as me?

Oh no................ it's gotta be the one I have the $10,000 snipe on.

I've been going through a streak lately where I've been getting outbid over and over- I'm going to surmise that my taste in coins keeps improving, and that others with more money take a shine to them too......
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !

Myqqy - Don't you know? Your taste and 'eye' has improved so much that we no longer waste time looking for coins. We just search on your name in EBay and outbid the preselected coins. It saves us a lot of time. image

No really, I thought the same was happening to me.

Once in a while. Especially when I haphazardly bid on a particular coin only to find someone here is selling it cheaper or someone at the bay has a B.I.N. on the same coin I'm bidding.image

just on items I really want

i lowball quite a few items that it doesn't matter much to me about

the items I really like, I put into 'auctionstealer' snipe program
then it bugs me when I did not put in a high enough bid and lose
    -> I think, geez,I'm too cheap, I could have gone another $50

I do have a list of bidders that have similar interests and 'search' what they are bidding on occasionally

Getting outbid for something I really want for my collection hurts at the moment, but I usually forget about it within a few hours. There only a couple of items that I am still sorry I did not get. Others, well another one came along.

It's bothersome so be outbid on a coin I want for my collection ... still reeling on a last second snipe on Heritage's last "online" session for a coin that I have been waiting for ...

... and by the way Heritage, if you're listening ... this is a STUPID format for us West Coast collectors who collect minors ... I don't get home until about 5:30p ... and I'm sure there are alot more of us out there ... half the stuff I watch goes off well before that ...

... anyway whoever bought it had to pay strong money, because I my bid was strong (actually it was up until the last 30 seconds). Oh well, hopefully another will come up again sometime in the near future. Kinda sucks though because if I could have waited and bid at the end (instead on that morning before work) it might have been mine.

However I will not "nuclear" bid a coin, not even at the last second. An example of why from as recent as yesterday. I was watching a 26s SLQ yesterday that I thought might go for a reasonable amount. I already have one, but it's a tough coin so I thought I might take two. SLQ's are hard to value correctly, because the sheet is worthless ... but I know what I figured, and up until the end I was ready because it was still (barely) within the window of a reasonable buy. With five minutes to go I decided not to do it ... someone was paying strong money for what appears to be a nice coin ... and I already have one which is the same grade and judging from the pictures, is probably just about the same in terms of overall quality and appeal. Much to my surprise when I logged on later I saw the coin closed at over half again as much. In looking through the bids it appears two eBayers "nuked" it ... one early, and one, even higher, at the last second. Those don't bother me ... in fact I got a good laugh on that one. Maybe the first guy really wanted to snuff out the competition ... and bid it up to the absolute maximum he would pay. I can accept and respect that. The last minute sniper was a Bidiot (IMO) ... more money than brains or patience.

  • Naw, I don't get tired of getting outbid. I like to bid. image When I really want something badly I bid more than I think I should. Even if I get outbid then I don't mind because I bid more than I felt the coin was worth.

It very rarely hurts for me to get outbid. To me shows I'm exercising discipline instead of just throwing a huge number out there that makes winning a certainty. Once in a while it aches to be outbid by dollar on something I thought I had a good buy on, but I find solace in believing the buyer probably bid $50 than his winning bid.

There's always another auction right around the corner. I just move on.

No. It comes with the territory. Unless you're one of these people who's collecting the finest known material, if you wait long enough, you'll find something that suits you at a price you think is acceptable. You might wait a long time - for me it has been three years on occasion -- though.

  • I got so used to it that if I really wanted something, I'd only go for the auctions with a BIN. This way I didn't have to deal with the last minute outbids. The only times where it STILL gets to me is if it's for something that you don't see up for auction that often, so you bid about three times what it's worth early, then you STILL get sniped by someone at the last minute and lose. The only saving grace is that they had to pay MUCH more than what it was worth. image (Happened to me on a particular baseball card. Sadly, I have yet to find that card ANYWHERE so it's still missing from my collection. image )

I bid on some stuff "weakly," stuff I'd like to have at the right price, and I also bid on some really great stuff "strongly," that I almost have to have.

If there's a coin that retails for (say) $100 and it's a weak item, I may bid $60-70. I rarely get it, but occasionally I'm surprised. It's not a must-have coin, but I'd like it for that money.

Then there are "must have" coins based on what I'm currently working on. These are ones in my sphere of interest that won't be up for bid tomorrow or next week if I don't win it. These I may go $120 or even $130.

In reality, there are very few coins I see which I both want desperately AND can afford which I won't see again fairly soon. And if I'm too cheap to bid strongly on the ones I really want AND can afford, it's my own fault.

  • What I hate is when you have a winning snipe in, in the last seconds, and someone manages to outsnipe during the time your placing a max bid. When you confirm your max bid it comes back auction ended.

Sucks but comes with the territory.
