what are some of the rare errors of the pro sets of the early 90s and their book values?

    First of all, book value means almost nothing when it comes to Pro Set errors and variations. Many are priced waaaay lower or higher than their actual value.

    Some of the ones to look for:

    1990 Dexter Manley #772 (found in final update sets only). The valuable variation has a mention of his suspension for substance abuse on back. and sells for between $150-$300 but there has been a long time since the last one sold so the next may go even higher.

    1990 Fred Marion #201. The valuable variation shows a 'belt' hanging from John Taylor on front. It looks like a penis, so it was quickly removed. Sells for between $70-100 now. Used to sell for more but many have shown up the last few years. Burbank Sportscards lists like 7 copies or something.

    1990 Mike Ditka #59. The valuable variation has the words 'Hall of Fame' in large font that stretches across the entire banner. I just sold a damaged copy for $20 but I image a mint copy would sell for closer to $50. These are almost never found for sale and are among the rarest Pro Set variations.

    1989 Gizmo Williams #535. The valuable variation spells football "footbal" on back. One just recently sold for over $100!

    1989 Jim McMahon, Ernest Byner, Gerald Riggs. Rare variations have a trade stripe on front and no "see ____ card #__" on back. Even rarer version which only a handful of copies are known has no trade stripe on front with "see ____ card #___" included on back.

    1991 Jim Kelly #8. The valuable variation has the NFLPA logo removed but the registration symbol still showing. These sell between $20-35 lately. They used to sell for $10-15.

    1991 Mike Prior #529 and Chip Banks #523. The valuable variations are missing all the text on back. Only their bio data, card number and stats are shown. The Prior sells between $30-40 lately and a poorly-titled Banks just sold for $25 or $28. Probably would've gone higher if had been listed correctly.

    Also worth noting: the Pro Set book from 1991 shows all their cards produced up to that point and pictures the 1989 James Jefferson #539 as having a "scouting photo" line on front. I have never seen a copy but I would imagine that it would go for a lot of money if it exists.

    I also remember hearing (or reading a letter maybe?) about the Andre Rison card #134 w/ Lud Denny message on back that was missing part of the printing.

    I do not remember the year but there was an error on Derrick Thomas of the Chiefs. On the error card, the Buffalo Bills logo was used and on the corrected... well... obviously the Chiefs logo is used.

    Speaking of which, that's how I came up with the year. Typed "Derick Thomas error" in and it came back as being 1990 and a picture of the card I was referring to.

    Yeah, that seller mis-labeled the auction. It looks like it's a lot of 1989 Pro Set RC's and a copy of the 1991 Pro Set Bills Helmet error.

    Some common misconceptions resulting from Beckett's price guide:

    1990 Pro Set Dan Hampton #449A will not (and never has) sell for $10. They are very commonly found.

    1990 Pro Set Charles Haley #289A will not (and never has) sell for $10. They did not correct this error until the very last part of the series 1 run. The corrected version is much tougher to locate.

    So that's what the Gizmo Williams error is? I remember seeing the high values for the ERR in Beckett but never knew the error. I'll just assume it's not in my boxes o' late 80s junk at my mom's house...

    Keep in mind that most of these were produced in ridiculously-small amounts for a very short time. I think less than 30 of the Manley are estimated to exist. There are probably several million of each 1990 Pro Set card alone, making many of these early (and in some cases, very late run) variations extremely difficult to find.

    I found few boxes of 1990 that I'm going to open. I remember some sort of rumor about the two different box bottoms. One is plain white and the other has a 3/4 inch gold stripe going around the perimeter of the box bottom. Anybody know what, if any, the difference is?

    Edited to add: I bought these boxes 07/28/90 for $14.00 each. Great investment, right? LOL

    Just found another one ... didn't look to see if they were different ... I remember some of these errors when the set first came out ... anyone know if they are worth anything? (other than the ones that the poster listed above)

    Here is my guide to the many variations in the 1990 Pro set football card set. I will list all of the known corrected errors/variations (cards that were never corrected will not be shown) here with details on them. I will also be adding pictures and more details shortly.     thanks for the lists, I reconsider and will be going to Orlando instead of sorting thru the boxes....I'll get to them when I return. Hopefully by then any other differences will be identified in this thread so I only have to go thru the cards once. I also would be interested in any that would be considered "Hi value" versus no major price difference between the error and the regular card

    anyone have the rocket ismail 1991 draft day cards? i've been looking on ebay but haven't seen them. i think there are 3 cards with him on the cowboys, pats, and falcons. Thanks for any help
