Steps to get 30% cashback on Ebay via www.live.com

(it's now down to 20% as of 10/6)

I have had a few people ask me how to do this, and I'm sure there may be someone wandering about trying to piece together all the steps...So I thought I would just put this together, once and for all...

Live.com (MSN) is currently giving 30% cashback, up to a max of $200 per transaction on buy-it-now items only. It is ideal to look for something costing as close to $675 as possible, as the $200 max is about 30% of this and you are limited to 6 purchases (must be in separate online sessions). My first purchase was a $10 eagle.

Step 1) If you don't have a live.com account which was registered with your *correct* name, address, etc. then you will need to follow this link and make a new ID, to register for cashback. I already had a live account, but I went ahead and made a fresh one since I didn't use my real name when I signed up for my other live account.

Step 2) Make sure you are signed in to your Live account, and follow this link. You should then notice the "live search cashback" symbol with "You may get XX% off with Paypal if eligible" which leads to www.ebay.com, like so:

Step 3) Once you follow step 2's link into Ebay, you are now free to search for a PCGS 1808/7 Bust half, or whatever your heart desires. Make sure you are select to show only buy it now auctions, because only buy it now's are eligible. You must keep open the same window in which you followed into ebay from Live search, and you must make the purchase within 1 hour of clicking the link, so therefore it may be prudent to find what you want before you begin the process via Live.com. To verify that you are set once in Ebay, you will notice a symbol at the top of the Ebay page indicating you're in 30% cashback mode, like so:

Step 4) Once you enter the search string that brings up what you want, go into the auction and choose buy it now like you normally would...There are no special tricks you have to use, you don't have to stand on your head or do a magical dance.... Once you select buy-it-now, you will be taken to the "commit to buy" or confirmation page, where you will see the amount of money that you will receive in your cashback account. Make *sure* you see this, if you do not see this, you are doing something wrong and you shouldn't commit to buy. Like so:

Step 5) You must pay for the auction with Paypal, and you must use the Ebay checkout system only (if the seller uses their own checkout system, you will not get the discount so if it's a big seller make sure of this first).* After this, Ebay will send an automated message to your Ebay inbox. You *must* follow the 'get cashback' link within, and log into your live.com account:

Step 6) Now, you will have to wait a few days. You will then see pending funds in your live.com cashback account. After about 2 months, the money will be yours to withdraw to your bank account or Paypal.

*thanks to Millertime for this correction

edit: don't re-sell what you buy on ebay, on ebay. MSN may catch you and this is against the terms.

You also have to make sure that the seller isn't using their own checkout page, it has to be through the eBay/PayPal checkout.

You are right! I left that out. Typically you need to look out for this with the big big sellers.

I'm actually not too sure - You may be able to tell by just reading their payment instructions.....Normally it's only big big sellers who do that....if in doubt, ask em.

Rob,

Good of you to post steps like that

I just got my 2nd (I've only used it twice) payment today...this one was for $250.

I've also sold 3 items for people using the cashback. I think it's pretty darn cool right now.
It's good for both sellers and buyers

"you are limited to 6 purchases (must be in separate online sessions). "

How are they defining a "session?"

I seem to remember that in the fine print somewhere.

I believe an "online session" is within one hour of when you navigated in from the MSN Cashback link provided above.

As hinted at earlier, it's a good idea to go on eBay normally, first, pick out some items and have them ready in your watchlist. THEN come in via the link.

I'm not sure about this, but I believe you can only get one cashback per "online session".

I made my first purchase, got the cashback notification in My Messages, then closed all my windows, came back here, bought two more coins, and got the cashback notification again (both of the coins I bought on my second trip into eBay were from the same seller. It added up the cashback on both of them, so it looks like I got credit for both.

This could be a really sweet deal if I had a little more dough to buy stuff, but even with my smaller purchases the cashback will be nice.

I'm not sure if my three coins count as two or as three purchases, though, with two being from the same seller. I only got two cashback messages, but it looks like I got credit for all three.

I might go back for more today.

I'm not exactly sure what the rules say about this, but I bought 3 items with the cashback within 15 minutes from the same seller last time around and got all 3 cashback in my PayPal.

After each purchase, I too logged out of ebay and closed all windows and restarted the process from the start. Seems like that may reset whatever an "online session" is.

Great info. I have been thinking about using this to buy a new camera but was a little sckeptical.

My question is can you pay with a credit card through PayPal or do you have to do an instant transfer from PayPal or a bank account?
